The 2018 Golden Globes: A Standout Night for Women’s Rights in the Workplace

After receiving a Golden Globe award for best performance by an actress in a limited series, Kidman revealed, “My mumma was an advocate for the women's movement when I was growing up, and because of her I am standing here.” On her role as Celeste Wright, a victim of domestic abuse on the show Big Little Lies, she noted that the character “represents something that is the center of our conversation right now: abuse. I do believe and I hope that we can elicit change through the stories we tell, and the way we tell them.”

At the end of an electrifying acceptance speech for the Cecil B. Demille lifetime achievement award, Winfrey exclaimed, “A new day is on the horizon… and when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women and some pretty phenomenal men are fighting hard to make sure they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody has to say 'me too' again."

In introducing the nominations for Best Director, Portman pointed out the lack of female representation: "And here are the all-male nominees."

On the red carpet, Messing told Giuliana Rancic: “We want diversity, we want intersectional gender parity, we want equal pay… I was so shocked to hear that E! doesn’t believe in paying their female co-hosts the same as their male co-hosts.”

Also on the topic of equal pay, Dern declared, “We need the powers that be and all the industries and all the networks and E! to help us with closing this pay gender gap. 50/50 by 2020.″

When she announced the winner for Best Motion Picture Drama, Streisand commented on the lack of female directors represented: "I heard them say something about, I was the only woman to get the Best Director award. And you know, that was 1984. That was 34 years ago… Folks, time's up! We need more women directors and more women to be nominated for Best Director. There are so many films out there that are so good directed by women."

Interviewed on the red carpet, Davis revealed, “I’m here because I hear the voices of women who said, ‘Me too,’—which, one of them was me… I hear those voices, those people who are nameless, faceless, every day, who don’t have a platform.”

In her acceptance speech for Best Television Limited Series for Big Little Lies, Witherspoon stated, "I want to thank everyone who broke their silence this year and spoke out about abuse and harassment. You are so brave. So people out there who are feeling silenced by harassment, discrimination, abuse, Time's Up! We see you, we hear you, and we will tell your stories."
