Our Survey Says

With an especially strong presence in the Lone Star State, Akin is known and respected internationally in the legal profession. Associates come from top national and regional schools, generally have top grades, and should have strong work ethics and good people skills. Firm settings are familial and cohesive—staff and attorneys all get along and support each other. More specifically, partners appreciate associates and take an interest in their development. Partner and associate mentors supplement the firm’s abundant formal trainings with helpful guidance and feedback. Lateral integration receives mixed reviews and could be more consistent. The quality of work assignments is high, and associates are encouraged to take on more responsibility and more advanced work. The distribution of work seems to be based largely on merit and availability in the firm’s free market system; the firm’s overall busyness and inclusion of tasks like client development, pro bono, and firm citizenship as qualifying hours makes the billable expectation of 1,950 bonus-eligible hours attainable. Though Akin is not a first mover, it does match the market for salary and bonuses. Firm tech and the support staff are both very good, but not necessarily innovative. An on-site counselor and other programs make associates content with wellness offerings, and they appreciate the strong pro bono culture at Akin. Pro bono staff members help them find projects, the hours for which count as billable. Resource groups help increase awareness of and advance diversity issues, and the firm is committed to hiring and retaining diverse talent. Making partner is feasible for many, while others become counsel or move on to corporate or government positions.
