A&O Shearman

Our Survey Says

Despite recent attention on applicants from T14 schools, hiring at A&O Shearman generally focuses on attorneys with diverse interests, a global/international background, and intellectual curiosity. Coworkers are laid-back but professional, respectful, and supportive. Partners take professional and personal interest in associates and value their work. Strong formal trainings, especially those conducted in person, are supplemented by associate and partner mentors who want to see junior associates thrive. Assignments are wide-ranging and important, giving associates opportunities to gain experience with different types of work. The recent merger has contributed to some complaints about firm transparency and communication, and the implementation of a 2,000-hour billable requirement has some associates concerned about the prospects for earning bonuses. However, associates appreciate that salaries match the market, and they enjoy the flexibility offered by the two-day work-form-home policy. They also say that technology supports hybrid work and that the firm has not only implemented various AI tools effectively but has also trained them on using these platforms responsibly. Wellness efforts include an on-site medical office, counseling programs, family planning benefits, and a meditation room. Pro bono work is valued and encouraged, and firm approval may be given for surpassing the cap on credible pro bono hours. Promotion to counsel and equity partner is attainable. Attorneys who leave tend to go in-house, to the government, or to other firms.
