Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
BCLP hires from a mix of nationally recognized and regional schools. The culture is collegial and collaborative, and most attorneys maintain an open door policy. Many attorneys participate in firm social activities, such as happy hours and holiday parties. The firm also offers flexibility for associates to work from home. Partners treat associates with respect and value their input, and many take the time to work directly with junior associates, developing relationships and investing in their careers. Every new associate receives both a partner and senior associate mentor. On-the-job training and mentoring enable associates to take advanced assignments as they show they’re ready, and formal trainings, such as deposition and trial academies, are available for mid-level and senior associates. The firm has a 1,900 billable hours requirement with creditable pro bono and firm citizenship hours. Base salaries are scaled depending on an associate’s geographic location, and associates say compensation is slightly below market, although attorneys who exceed the billable hours requirement can make up the difference with additional bonuses. Promotion is realistic for those who want it, with associates typically moving to partnership within 8 to 10 years. Counsel roles are also available, as are exit opportunities to go to other law firms or in-house with clients. Notable perks include the chance to earn 40 hours of billable paid time off, a business development allowance, parental leave benefits, and access to a health advocate.
