Cooley’s hiring process varies by office, but the firm consistently emphasizes academic excellence, interest in the firm’s practice areas, and ties to the hiring office. The firm interviews graduates from top national programs and regional schools, as well as laterals. New hires should fit with their entrepreneurial, collegial, friendly, and laid-back colleagues. At Cooley, people express appreciation for one another. The firm nurtures partner-associate relationships by organizing small-group dinners and mentorship groups. Partners solicit feedback and ideas from associates and happily answer questions. When starting at Cooley, associates attend a week of formal training and are assigned integration buddies. On-demand and practice-specific training, as well as CLE classes and workshops, is also available. Associates appreciate the client contact and substantive work that they receive early. They work on a variety of matters handling both level-appropriate and higher-level assignments and take ownership of their work. Cooley has a 1,950 billable hours requirement, which includes unlimited hours for pro bono, as well as creditable time for firm citizenship. Pay matches the market, and associates who meet the hours requirement receive a market bonus. Above-market bonuses are available for high performers. Promotion to partnership is realistic, and partners willingly discuss the process when asked. Senior associates can earn promotion to special counsel, which does not eliminate them from partnership consideration. The firm offers strong exit opportunities in the tech and biotech industries.
