The Cravath Rotation System

The hallmark of our training program is our Rotation System, which is unique to Cravath. Associates are assigned work with a partner or small group of partners for a period of time. At the end of that period, each associate switches—or “rotates”—to work with a different partner or group of partners within their department of choice.

The Cravath Rotation System is designed to expose associates to a wide range of work over the course of their careers, while fostering direct partner mentoring and accelerated skill development within each rotation.  Because we rarely hire laterally, partners come almost exclusively from the ranks of our own associates, and it is therefore a shared priority among the partnership to provide direct, hands-on training to the next generation of our Firm.

Unlike a general assignment system, Cravath’s Rotation System removes the need for associates to compete for work, visibility or bonuses, producing an environment that, while demanding, is also uniquely cooperative.

Mentorship

In addition to the mentoring they receive as part of the Rotation System, associates are also supported through our formalized programs.  Incoming associates are assigned an associate advisor when they arrive.  Typically, beginning in their second year, associates have the opportunity to participate in our formal partner mentor program, as well.

Alumni Network

We take great pride in the success of our alumni and maintain a robust alumni network by hosting events and maintaining an online Alumni Center, which includes a directory of alumni contact information.  Our alumni are also provided access to the Cravath Career Center, which includes a job board that is a helpful extension of the Cravath network for alumni who are exploring new career opportunities or are looking to fill a position and want to share it with the Cravath network.
