Working at a high-caliber firm like Debevoise means you have landed with the New York elite—but snobbishness is not tolerated at the firm. Rather the firm has a reputation among associates for “Debevoise nice,” where professionalism and kindness are expected from the top down. The firm’s culture is collegial and supportive, with extensive training offered at all levels, and mentorship is taken seriously. Associates appreciate that the firm is social without being overbearing with events and expectations. Debevoise is one of the last true lock-step firms, with no billable hour requirement and market compensation and bonuses. This allows associates to focus on the quality of work and encourages participation in pro bono matters. Night and weekend work are rare, and time away from the office is universally respected. Associates view partners as respectful and engaged and feel that partners can be approached for guidance and support. Debevoise associates often are trusted with work above their level and get early client interaction at the firm. Associates know partnership is unlikely, but counsel positions and exit opportunities with the government or elsewhere are supported by firm partners and the devoted career counselor. Technology can be improved, but associates appreciate the firm’s hybrid work schedule and home office set-ups. Wellness is abundant at Debevoise, from the onsite health clinic at the New York office, to sports teams, to support programs for new mothers, to name a few. Diversity is important to the firm, and classes are showing greater numbers of diverse members.
