If you’re looking for great relationships with partners, true lockstep compensation with no billable hour requirement, and incredible pro bono opportunities, then Debevoise may be for you. Most new associates come from T14 schools, have work experience, and can seamlessly transition into the professional, friendly, and supportive office settings. Associates praise the work-life balance at Debevoise. Partners are approachable, respectful, and willing to help more junior attorneys learn on the job. Strong mentor-mentee relationships lead to helpful feedback and professional development, and the formal training programs are extensive. Work assignments range from basic document review to more sophisticated projects that include client contact and support associates in stretching into different practices. A centralized staffing system generally enables tasks to be distributed fairly, but experience and prior relationships also impact distribution. Lockstep compensation (which is in line with the rest of BigLaw) and the absence of a billable hour requirement translate into less pressure, as lawyers do not need to meet billables or compete with fellow associates for work. Remote work and the IT support staff are lauded, but the technological systems and programs are outdated and need to be improved. Wellness initiatives, including an on-site health center and free counseling sessions, are expansive and effective. Associates appreciate Debevoise’s strong commitment to and history of pro bono work. There is no limit on the number of pro bono hours treated as billable. Diversity issues are effectively addressed through firm-sponsored retreats and an impressive number of affinity groups. Becoming a partner is possible but difficult, and associates can become counsel or leave for in-house positions, the government, or other law firms.
