Debevoise and Plimpton associates laud their firm’s culture of kindness. They consistently describe their fellow attorneys and the staff as nice, quick to say “thanks,” and friendly. The partners follow a lockstep compensation model, which associates say fosters a collaborative atmosphere. While attorneys at Debevoise socialize outside of work, the firm does not have a party culture, and associates say people respect having an outside life. The hours can be long and unpredictable, but they are evenly distributed through a central staffing system, with more-senior attorneys also seeking out favorite junior attorneys for assignments. Associates do not need to worry about hitting a set number of hours per year as the firm has a soft target of 2,000 billable hours. This goal includes unlimited pro bono work, and nearly all attorneys participate in the firm’s pro bono practice. Attorneys enjoy compensation at the top of the market, with the firm matching market salaries and bonuses. Hiring is selective, with candidates coming from T14 schools or as high performers from regional schools. While making partner at the firm is challenging, the firm offers counsel roles, and partnership can be attained via the counsel position. In addition, the firm provides a career counseling service to help associates find exit opportunities such as in-house corporate roles or government positions.
