Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
Dentons finds associates who are top graduates of solid law schools who have strong regional connections to the hiring office. The firm also looks for community leaders who will fit in with colleagues who are respectful and professional. The firm allows remote work and sponsors events to bring colleagues together. Partners are approachable, appreciative, and willing to help associates by giving feedback and challenges. Associates say that firm management needs to improve how it communicates about firm policies. Laterals report different integration experiences; some suggest that they would have benefited from more training on firm processes, and others say that they wanted to receive work sooner. All associates negotiate the firm’s free market system of work allocation. Assignments range from basic to challenging, with opportunities for associates who demonstrate ability to take projects beyond their experience level. Assigned associate and partner mentors provide guidance and training, and the formal training is not as effective as mentorship. Billing requirements, which vary by office, range from 1,800 to 2,000 hours. Compensation also differs between markets, although junior level salaries are market. Although the technology at Dentons is said to be outdated, some associates are hopeful that solutions, including new laptops, are on the horizon. Wellness efforts include counseling resources, gym discounts, and seminars. A dedicated partner publicizes pro bono opportunities and celebrates wins in the field. Fifty hours of pro bono work are creditable, and with approval, more hours can be applied to the requirement. Associates see promotion pathways to counsel, non-equity partner, and equity partner positions, and those who wish to depart find good in-house options.
