VAULT'S VERDICT:

With almost 6,000 attorneys across more than 160 offices, Dentons leads the way in size, scope, and opportunities for associates. The hiring department casts a wide net—there are no specific feeder schools—to snag ambitious, well-rounded candidates. At the firm, associates find team-oriented, collaborative coworkers who enjoy personal interactions and socializing. Partners are personally and professionally invested in associates, taking time to both seek input and provide feedback. In addition to limited, but helpful, formal training programs, senior associates and partners augment associate development by serving as supportive, positive resources. Dentons makes sure lateral hires are onboarded effectively. Work assignments vary, ranging from document review and drafting to challenging work with sophisticated clients. Projects are assigned so that all associates are busy with a range of tasks, though partners often gravitate toward those with whom they’ve worked before. Dentons associates must bill 1,950 hours per year and an additional 50 hours of creditable pro bono or diversity-related work. They enjoy great flexibility in when and where they work. Compensation is competitive but not the market standard, with disparities among office locations. Firm technology is satisfactory, and IT staff-driven improvements and updates are appreciated. Wellness initiatives, such as free therapy and meditation sessions, are mostly on par with those of other firms; they are not noteworthy. A dedicated staff encourages pro bono work, but associates are limited to the aforementioned 50 creditable hours combined for pro bono and diversity work. Diversity efforts include the establishment of affinity groups, webinars, and a general sense of support and inclusion. Promotion opportunities consist of counsel roles, non-equity partnership, and equity partnership. External options include in-house positions with firm clients.
