Elsberg, Baker & Maruri LLP undergoes a competitive hiring process with a focus on candidates with good grades from top schools. Candidates must demonstrate that they’ll fit within the firm’s open, supportive, and relaxed culture, where learning by doing, willingness to take responsibility, and collegiality are prized. Associates say everyone at the firm knows each other and that they will often eat lunch or go out for drinks together after work. Laterals can expect to receive support and work right away. Partners invite ideas and feedback from associates and work closely with them on cases, actively seeking opportunities to accelerate associates’ professional development, including opportunities for client contact and going to trial. Performance reviews are held annually, and partners willingly share insights about the firm’s finances and performance when asked. Associates handle substantive work and take ownership of their cases from beginning to end. The firm has no billable hours requirement and offers a flexible remote-work policy. The firm pays a market base salary, offers substantially above-market bonuses, and provides origination credits for associates on business that they bring in. Promotion to partnership is attainable and realistic, taking approximately seven years, but the firm does not offer alternative senior roles.
