Getting hired at Elsberg Baker & Maruri requires top grades from top schools, and the firm values clerkships. Associates must also fit the firm’s close-knit culture. The firm is small enough that everyone knows each other, and although there’s little pressure to socialize outside work, most attorneys do so. The ratio of associates to partners is low, and the firm’s hierarchy is flat. Associates have opportunities to work with all the partners and develop one-on-one relationships with them. Partners also actively mentor associates and sponsor them to get trial experience and other skill development opportunities. Associates tend to take on lots of responsibility early, and most learning occurs through feedback on the job. There is flexibility in how associates schedule their days, and the firm ensures associates can take vacation by involving entire teams on all aspects of a case, making it easier to find coverage. The firm pays market-level base salaries, with substantially above-market bonuses that are not linked to billable hours. Making equity partner is realistic, and the seven-year partnership track is transparent. There is no non-equity partnership tier. Notable perks include a large business development budget, a flexible gym pass benefit, and wellness and exercise challenges.
