VAULT'S VERDICT:
With roots in London and Atlanta, Eversheds Sutherland is a truly unique blend of cultures and pedigrees. As one of the largest law firms in the world, Eversheds Sutherland practices at the highest levels across multiple areas. Notably, the firm has retained aspects of its Southern origins, including charm. Candidates with sufficiently strong credentials are assessed holistically, and small summer associate classes mean that the firm hires with an eye to long-term retention. Associates praise the firm’s personable atmosphere in which attorneys socialize both organically and at organized events, and they feel genuinely supported by the firm and colleagues. Firm leadership is remarkably transparent for BigLaw, which goes a long way toward making associates feel respected and invested. Because of this transparency, associates have a good career outlook and perceive partnership as attainable, with many attractive alternative options when partnership is not the goal. Hours are long but manageable, although some associates wish the firm would align bonus eligibility with the overall billable requirement. Compensation lags slightly behind the market but associates are, overall, satisfied with their total compensation. The firm performs better on diversity initiatives than other firms, although more progress needs to be made. Eversheds Sutherland shines through pro bono work, offering unlimited billable credit for pro bono hours and recognizing attorneys for pro bono work through annual awards.
