Eversheds Sutherland is one of the largest firms in the world with more than 3,000 attorneys practicing in offices in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. In addition, a network of more than 200 related law firms form alliances with firms in Latin America, the Asia Pacific region, and Africa, providing support around the globe. In the United States, lawyers work across 10 offices from coast to coast.

The Makings of a Mega Firm

In early 2017, Eversheds Sutherland was formed through the combination of the U.S. firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP and the U.K. firm Eversheds LLP. Sutherland, formed in 1924 by William Sutherland, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, and Elbert Tuttle, began as a tax firm. After World War II, the firm began expanding practice areas to become a full-service firm.

On the other side of the pond, Eversheds traced its roots to the founding of Evershed & Tomkinson Solicitors in Birmingham in 1914. In the late 1980s, the modern incarnation of the firm was formed through a multiparty merger of several U.K. regional practices.

All-Around Strength

Eversheds Sutherland is home to many important practices, including corporate, energy, financial services, intellectual property (IP), litigation, real estate, and tax law practices. The firm’s corporate lawyers work across a myriad of areas, including bankruptcy, finance, M&A, securities, technology, and vendor compliance. Litigators work on everything from class action defense, product liability, cybersecurity, and internal investigations to financial services litigation and bankruptcy. The firm incorporates legal project management in its litigation matters and also helps clients avoid future risks.

Eversheds Sutherland has a recognized energy practice executed by lawyers with extensive experience. The firm counsels on energy commodity trading in addition to energy company bankruptcy, project development, renewable energy, regulatory, and other issues.

The firm is a presence in the real estate community, with lawyers across the globe focused on their respective geographic areas. Eversheds Sutherland lawyers have experience working with different property types such as affordable housing, industrial, retail, multifamily, and mixed-use developments.

In addition, the firm represents taxpayers in federal, international, employee benefit, insurance, tax exemption, and state and local tax matters. The firm is active in every area of taxation, from planning the most complex corporate tax transactions to representing taxpayers in administrative and judicial tax controversies.
