About Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP

Eversheds Sutherland is one of the largest firms in the world, with more than 3,000 attorneys practicing in offices in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. In addition, a network of more than 200 related law firms, including formalized alliances in Latin America, Asia Pacific and Africa, provide support around the globe. In the U.S., lawyers work across eight offices from coast to coast.

The Makings of a Mega Firm

In early 2017, Eversheds Sutherland was formed through the combination of the U.S. firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP and the U.K. firm Eversheds LLP. Sutherland began as a tax firm, formed in 1924 by William Sutherland, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, and Elbert Tuttle. After World War II, the firm began expanding to additional practice areas, becoming a full-service firm.

On the other side of the pond, Eversheds traced its roots to the founding of Evershed & Tomkinson Solicitors in Birmingham in 1914. In the late ’80s, the more modern incarnation of the firm was formed through a multi-pronged merger of several U.K. regional practices.

All Around Strength

Eversheds Sutherland is home to many strong practices, such as corporate, energy and infrastructure, financial services, intellectual property, litigation, real estate, and tax law.

The firm’s corporate lawyers work across myriad areas, including bankruptcy, finance, media, M&A, securities, technology, vendor compliance, and more. Litigators work on everything from class action defense and product liability to cybersecurity and internal investigations to financial services litigation and bankruptcy—plus many more. The firm incorporates legal project management in its litigation matters and also assists clients with avoiding future risks.

Eversheds Sutherland has a recognized energy practice with expansive experience. The firm counsels on the trading of energy commodities in addition to such topics as energy bankruptcy, project development, renewable energy, and regulatory issues.

The firm is a presence in the real estate community, with lawyers across the globe focused on the area. Lawyers at the firm have experience working with such property types as affordable housing, industrial, retail, multifamily, and mixed-use developments.

In addition, the firm represent taxpayers in federal, international, employee benefits, insurance, tax exempt, and state and local tax matters. The firm is active in every area of taxation, from planning the most complex corporate tax transactions to representing taxpayers in administrative and judicial tax controversies.

Cannabis Across 50 States

The firm is also home to a multi-disciplinary cannabis team, bringing experience from such areas as finance, health care, IP, land use, litigation, M&A, regulatory, and tax, to name a handful. And if you were wondering how to sort through the varied state regulations on cannabis, look no further than Eversheds Sutherland. A group of attorneys at the firm authored and compiled The State of Cannabis Law: A Fifty State Compendium.

COVID-19 Update

Eversheds Sutherland hires attorneys and summer associates who will further contribute to the firm's culture and reputation for excellence in every respect. We recruit candidates with impressive credentials and work experience, focusing on individuals who reflect some of the firm’s core values of being approachable, self-motivated, collaborative, professional, and creative. The intellectual quality of our attorneys is uniformly high, and we seek candidates whose personal qualities, skills, and interests will enrich the firm. During the coronavirus pandemic and moving forward, we are continuing our steady focus on candidates who will enhance our practice, service to clients, and community. We are filling existing positions by hiring lateral associates and we are building a pipeline for future associates by hiring summer associates. We encourage candidates across all positions to apply with us directly. We are also participating in virtual OCI at various law schools. Essentially, we will continue to grow and evolve.
