VAULT'S VERDICT:

Although it can be tough to get hired at Gibson Dunn (the firm hires students from the top of their law school classes), those who join the firm enjoy doing world-class legal work in a free market system. While the firm does not have a formal requirement, it recommends a robust in-office presence and facilitates face time by sponsoring a variety of social events, making the office an enticing place to be. The firm also invests heavily in retreats that bring together associates from across the world. Associate-partner relations and transparency around finances and firm performance are strong, although some associates expressed that there could be more clarity around promotions. The firm has a 1,950 billable hour benchmark, and uncapped pro bono hours count the same as billable hours toward this requirement (with a recommendation of at least 50 pro bono hours and a minimum expectation of 20 hours). In addition to market salaries and bonuses tied to the 1,950-hour benchmark, the firm offers above-market super bonuses for those who bill 2,100 or more hours. Associates have no complaints about technology, citing that it is easy to work remotely and that they have access to AI tools such as Harvey and Kira. The firm’s remote-work flexibility is identified as an attorney wellness perk, and the firm also offers free virtual counseling, free One Medical membership, and gyms in at least some offices. A variety of formal training is available but not mandatory, and associates agree that the majority of their learning comes through informal mentoring. Promotion to equity partnership is perceived as realistic for those willing to make the effort, counsel roles are available and viable as long-term positions, and exit opportunities are excellent. The firm takes inclusion efforts very seriously, and associates particularly praise the flexibility policy, disability and parental leave policies, and fertility benefits as evidence of this commitment.
