Our Survey Says

 VAULT'S VERDICT:

Hogan Lovells hires predominantly, but certainly not exclusively, from top law schools, and the ideal Hogan candidate is well-rounded and engaged with demonstrated professional drive. At such a large firm, it makes sense that firm “culture” is heavily influenced by office and practice groups, but across the board, associates describe the firm as collegial and collaborative. By and large, associates feel respected and appreciated by partners and senior attorneys, and firm management strives to be transparent to associates (with varying degrees of success). Mentoring and training are useful with room for improvement. The firm goes above and beyond when it comes to compensation; in addition to always matching market (Cravath scale), Hogan offers higher bonuses for higher billers, which bolsters morale as well as compensation. The Hogan Lovells billable requirement is fairly standard for BigLaw at 2,000 hours, but associates wish that the firm didn’t adhere so strictly to the bonus cutoff. One area in which Hogan shines the brightest is pro bono work. The firm has the oldest pro bono department in the industry and remains dedicated to this work today, offering billable credit for 150 pro bono hours and extensive opportunities in a variety of practices. Up to 50 hours devoted to diversity initiatives are counted as billable, and associates are starting to see real results from these efforts. Associates view partnership as an achievable goal through a fairly transparent process.

THE FIRM'S PERSPECTIVE:

Our culture sets us apart from other law firms. It’s at the center of who we are at the firm.

For one, we offer a vibrant and supportive network with shared ambition. Join us and you’ll be part of a global team that partners with world-leading innovators, actively shaping the future. We realize opportunities for many of the largest global brands around the world, particularly in complex, high-stakes, and multijurisdictional matters that often lie at the intersection of business and government. Then there’s our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which is at the core of who we are and how we do business. We seek talented individuals from all backgrounds to build diverse and integrated teams. We invest in our people. Our award-winning HL Learn programs provide platforms for professional and personal growth. HL Dialogue furthers our commitment to provide feedback and opportunity for career development.  HL Passport allows our secondees to expand their network and build relationships with clients and colleagues across borders. And we are committed to being a responsible business. Giving back is part of our DNA. Almost 50 years ago, we were the first law firm to establish a freestanding pro bono department. Focusing on access to justice and the rule of law, our U.S. lawyers spend more than 150,000+ hours annually on work to achieve lasting impact for others.

We’re proud of our supportive and ambitious culture and environment that foster success and bring out your best. We invite you to see if Hogan Lovells is the right place to start your career.
