Our Survey Says
- “I received numerous substantive assignments, including drafting an entire motion for summary judgment that the firm ultimately won.”
- “I worked directly with partners and associates on meaningful work. Specifically, I helped on a transaction that came in the door and reviewed the due diligence materials, prepared closing documents, etc., and helped close the deal. Very meaningful work.”
- “The firm provides a wide variety of social events, many of which include partners. In addition, there's an expectation that summer associates will have lunch with attorneys every day. Some of the people I summered with are still the people I am closest to among my co-workers—the firm doesn't take on [more summers] than it could hire, so the camaraderie between summers is really strong.”
- “The firm flew all of us out to Denver. We met there, had orientation, and participated in fun events.”
- “My work experience has been very consistent with my summer experience, with the exception of the billable hour. Blissfully, the firm had no billable hour requirement for summers, so obviously that required some transition, but that was entirely expected.”
- “The events are obviously a little different. However, overall, I think it is a very similar experience. I have more work now as an attorney than as a summer, but that is for obvious reasons.”
- “Firm karaoke is truly legendary, and that's coming from someone who was very much dreading it before it happened.”
- “Flying to Denver and having a summer clerk-only dinner.”
The Firm Says
Holland & Hart’s Summer Clerk Program offers a comprehensive learning, training, and social experience for its participants. Second-year law students are hired into specific practice groups; first-year law students are hired through our 1L Diverse Summer Experience program in partnership with firm clients and through the Colorado Pledge to Diversity. All summer clerks are invited to participate in the same training and development programs offered to associates, including opportunities to participate on committees while at the firm. Summer clerks are matched with peer advisors, mentors, and work supervisors. The summer program typically lasts for 10 weeks. In response to the pandemic in 2020, the firm hosted a modified, mostly virtual, five-week program consisting of 19 clerks in six offices. In 2021, the firm expects to have a similarly sized class in either a hybrid, virtual, or in-person program.
