Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Hughes Hubbard Reed has a smaller firm culture where everyone actually knows each other and enjoys each other’s company, with regular firm-sponsored events that nearly everyone attends. Associates are treated well and with respect by partners, but the firm is rather opaque about several policies and decisions at the management level. The firm has an above-market billable hour requirement that associates report is difficult to meet in order to qualify for a bonus. The firm pays market salaries and bonuses, but the bonus structure is complicated and associates find the bonuses difficult to earn. Work is mostly substantive and appropriate for associate experience levels, and the firm’s technology is good and supports seamless remote work (although the firm wants associates in-office three days a week). The firm does not offer many formal wellness initiatives, although it does make counseling available to associates. Training is robust and frequent, and each associate is assigned both an associate and partner mentor, and these relationships are genuinely invested in. Promotion to partnership is realistic, although the path is not clear, and exits to government agencies or in-house with clients are available as well. Fifty hours of pro bono work are required independent of the billable hour requirement, and past that initial 50 hours, up to 150 hours of additional pro bono work contribute to earning a bonus. The firm does not offer billable credit for diversity-related work and doesn’t have many visible initiatives on this front beyond the existence of some affinity groups.
