Jenner & Block

Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Jenner & Block wants to bring in only as many associates as it can support with full workloads and future prospects, so hiring is selective, and people who express a sincere interest in being at the firm are considered. Laterals and clerks are welcomed with training and support. Associates describe a friendly and balanced culture in which everyone has a life outside the office. Partners are approachable and want associates to succeed long-term, and associates appreciate the horizontal relationships they enjoy with many partners, who seek associate input and opinions. Jenner & Block mandates an all-in target of 1,950 hours to earn a bonus. Associates say that weekend work is rare and not the expectation, attributing this balance, in part, to a weekly workload survey that is taken seriously by management. Compensation, including special bonuses, matches the market, and the firm offers super bonuses for high billers. Associates are given substantive work that encourages them to stretch their capabilities with support as part of the learning process. The firm’s professional development team takes associate feedback seriously, and formal training has recently been improved. Formal mentoring is robust, and informal mentoring is prevalent. Technology is said to be sufficient to get work done, and the IT team is always available and helpful. Associates cite a supportive environment and parental leave, as well as Peloton, One Medical, and Calm app benefits, among the firm’s wellness efforts. Jenner & Block encourages all attorneys to participate in pro bono work, crediting 100 hours of it to the billable hours requirement and all additional hours toward a super bonus. Non-equity partnership is a stop on the way to equity partnership, and no productive attorneys are asked to leave the firm; they can stay in non-partner capacities. Those who choose to leave receive support for their next adventure.
