Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
Jenner & Block is selective in hiring—it’s looking for high-caliber associates who fit in the firm’s social and open culture. While the firm favors candidates with journal experience, clerkships, and a high GPA, it doesn’t limit the law schools it recruits from. Once hired, associates are welcomed into Jenner & Block’s friendly and supportive culture. Partners value associates and take the time to mentor and teach, and associates feel their contributions are valued. The firm is transparent regarding the firm’s outlook and finances. The firm provides flexibility but also employs weekly “collaboration days” to maintain its culture and attorney development, and allows associates to largely manage their workload, distributing substantive work to associates to develop their skills early on. Compensation is market level, and bonuses are tied to hitting the billable hour requirement, with super bonuses available for high billers and those with significant non-billable contributions. Jenner & Block has invested in improving firm technology, with recent improvements in document management systems, equipment upgrades, and providing home office setups for associates. Wellness efforts focus on maintaining associates’ mental and physical health—from wellness app subscriptions to gym memberships to respecting associates’ time off and vacations. Training opportunities at the firm are plentiful, and true mentorship relationships allow associates to flourish. Becoming a partner takes hard work and effort, and the firm provides professional development programs for mid-level and senior associates, so the expectations to make partner are clear. Associates also have access to an in-house placement program, as well as many firm connections to government organizations. Jenner & Block has been dedicated to pro bono since the 1950s, and the firm isn’t afraid to take on controversial pro bono issues, assisting varying groups in often marginalized communities. Associates note the firm’s internal diversity and inclusion efforts as well as its support of diversity outside the firm through its promotion of social justice and equity.
