Kellogg Hansen hires associates from T14 law schools who have had at least one federal clerkship. Colleagues are friendly and respectful, and social interactions are pleasant but limited because people work so much. Partners value associates, give them early responsibilities, and trust them to create high-quality work product. Formal training consists largely of lunch-and-learn sessions, as the firm relies on associates to learn on the job, and although partner and associate mentors are assigned, associates say that the best support comes through informally established mentorships. Clerks receive a substantial bonus, and they are integrated effectively. Early in their tenure, associates are given meaningful and challenging assignments, some of which are beyond their experience level. Everyone stays busy and enjoys flexibility in work hours and location. Kellogg Hansen does not have a billable hours requirement, but associates can expect to work 2,600 or more hours per year. Compensation is above the market average. Firm technology is satisfactory, with AI programs available, and the IT team is helpful. Up to 200 pro bono hours over two years can be counted as billable. All partners at the firm are equity partners, and associates are eligible to be considered for partnership after six years at the firm. Common exit options are government and in-house positions. Perks include firm contributions to a 401(k), a firm retreat every 18 months, and reimbursements for outfitting the office, moving, and using a ride service after hours.
