Kellogg Hansen

Our Survey Says

If you simply want to do top-notch litigation out of a small firm in Washington, DC, then look no further than Kellogg Hansen. Top grades, federal clerkship experience, and agreeable personalities are a must for getting hired, and the firm does not focus only on certain schools. Office settings are professional, friendly, and laid back despite the intensity of the work. People enjoy each others’ company, but social activities are not overwhelming. Lean teams mean partners treat associates as colleagues and value their input, and overall relations are pleasant. Organized training and mentoring are limited, and associates like it that way. They’d rather learn by asking or doing. Since Kellogg Hansen hires almost exclusively from clerkships, a polished onboarding process is standard. All associates get high-quality, challenging work—which there is plenty of—early on and are encouraged to push themselves. There is no set billable hour requirement, though associates often bill in the high 2,000-hour or low 3,000-hour range. Compensation is unparalleled and above the market scale, which comports with the number of hours they work. Some aspects of firm technology are outdated and sluggish, though the IT support staff is excellent at troubleshooting issues. Wellness efforts beyond fertility-related and child-care benefits are non-existent, and up to 200 hours of pro bono work over two years counts as billable, though the firm does not seem to prioritize this work. Kellogg Hansen is a respectful, tolerant place, but there is a noticeable lack of women and persons of color, so diversity efforts need some work. Associates feel positive about being elevated to counsel or partner, and the firm’s reputation opens a lot of doors for external moves.
