Our Survey Says

Mayer Brown may have its origins in a fight over a horse, but any vestiges of acrimony are nowhere to be found in this Chicago-native firm, which has retained its friendly Midwestern vibe even as it rose to BigLaw prominence. Associates rave about the firm’s pleasant, professional, and supportive culture, which they say strikes the perfect balance between offering opportunities to socialize while still respecting work-life boundaries. Partners are described as kind, funny, and deeply invested in associate career development, as reflected in a general open-door policy and desire to coach and mentor associates. Management is somewhat opaque, although associates see nothing nefarious in this opacity and in fact, appreciate management’s efforts to improve transparency in recent years. Formal training is robust in the early years before tapering off somewhat, but informal training opportunities are countless and widely viewed as equally, if not more, valuable. Hours are standard (read: long) for BigLaw, but associates do feel able to protect their time off and are pleased that the firm makes 200 hours of billable credit available for pro bono and “thought leadership” (which includes DE&I work). Compensation is a point of slight contention—although Mayer Brown consistently “matches” the market, associates are less than thrilled that class year salary bumps are tied to billable hours, in addition to bonuses. Still, associates largely feel well compensated and appreciated, particularly in their overall career trajectories; partnership is difficult but attainable, and the firm actively facilitates finding desirable exit opportunities for associates who desire a different path.
