Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Mayer Brown hires academically accomplished associates from top national and regional schools. The firm looks for candidates with experience and compatibility with the people in the office, who are friendly, collaborative, and professional. Coworkers enjoy working and socializing with each other. Partners are accessible; they care about associates getting experience and developing professionally. Associates receive training in person, through on-demand videos, and in weekly webinars, and further guidance is available through assigned associate and partner mentors. Lateral hires benefit from a structured onboarding process that includes trainings, meetings, and retreats. Associates assume responsibility while taking substantive, interesting, and challenging projects, and they have significant interaction with clients. The firm is flexible about work time and location and is transparent about promotions and firm finances and goals. Mayer Brown requires 2,000 billable hours, with 1,800 hours needed for class promotion, 1,900 needed for bonus eligibility, and an additional 100 or 200 qualified non-billable hours needed to meet the target. Compensation matches the BigLaw standard, and bonuses are awarded for hours billed and for meaningful contributions. Technology, in the form of document management systems, remote work tools, and collaboration resources, is consistently updated and improved. Wellness offerings include on-site and remote counseling services, wellness rooms, and fitness stipends. A dedicated department and coordinator encourage pro bono work, with either 100 or 200 hours counted as billable. Realistic internal career prospects include counsel, income partner, and equity partner. External options include roles in the government, in-house, and at other firms.
