Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
Mayer Brown hires from a diverse set of schools, including T14 institutions and respected regional schools. It looks for candidates with strong writing skills who are team-oriented and will mesh with its positive and social culture. Attorneys regularly spend time together at social gatherings during the week, participate in seasonal celebrations, and eat lunch together. However, they also say that there’s no pressure to attend events and that the firm respects their personal lives. Although the firm has implemented a return-to-office policy, associates say that flexibility is still provided as long as deadlines are met and that remote work is made easy with 24/7 tech support. Associates, even summers and juniors, say they work directly alongside partners, who dedicate substantial time to training and mentorship. The firm offers assigned mentors and access to virtual and in-person training. The firm has a free market assignment system, and partners are willing to help associates with more challenging work, which they can take when they’re ready. The firm has a 2,000-hour billable requirement that includes capped pro bono hours and business development hours. The salaries are market, and attorneys who hit the billable hours requirement earn a bonus, with additional bonuses available for each additional 100 hours billed. Making equity partner is realistic, and non-equity partner and counsel positions are options for those staying long-term. The firm also offers strong exit opportunities to in-house positions, other firms, and the government. In addition to a wellness program that features an on-site well-being counselor, career coaches, and fertility benefits, notable perks include limited hours arrangements, a concierge service, and pet care services.
