Recruiting at Nelson Mullins emphasizes credentials such as grades, journal experience, and work experience, with smaller markets focusing on regional schools and larger markets on upper-level schools. Coworkers are pleasant, friendly, and professional, and all employees are made to feel like part of the team. Partners care about associates and their professional growth; however, transparency from management, especially regarding compensation, is lacking. Assigned mentors help early career associates become better attorneys, and associates receive plenty of hands-on experience. Likewise, laterals are mentored and supported. Work assignments include not only document review but also more substantive tasks such as trial prep and direct work with clients and opposing counsel. Partners are good about distributing projects fairly. The billable requirement is 1,900 hours and the firm’s collections-based model for compensation means associates must make their collections goal to receive bonuses, raises, and tier retention. Salaries are below the market standard. Firm technology is sufficient but not innovative, with improvements needed for better document management and timekeeping software. Wellness efforts include newsletters, seminars on mental health, and Calm subscriptions. Pro bono work is encouraged, and opportunities are promoted regularly; related hours count toward the collections goal, not as billable. Associates see clear paths to counsel and non-equity positions, but chances of making equity partner are less clear and less likely. Those who depart go in-house or to the government.
