The firm looks for candidates with outstanding pedigrees, with law schools in local markets well represented, and successful candidates demonstrate an understanding of and interest in the firm’s international identity. For a BigLaw firm, Norton Rose Fulbright excels at striking a balance between compensation—which is based on New York market—and required billable hours—which, at 1,900, are lower than at peer firms. Moreover, 50 of these hours can consist of a combination of pro bono work and professional development efforts. As an additional perk, Norton Rose Fulbright rewards high billers—associates who bill more than 600 hours in a three-month period—with a sizeable reimbursement for vacation expenses, incentivizing associates to prioritize wellness and demonstrating commitment to work-life balance. Associates are happy to receive high-level assignments early in their careers, particularly because partners are overwhelmingly supportive and available for guidance through the firm’s open-door policy. Leadership is remarkably transparent, both in terms of firm business and about the reasonably strong partnership prospects for associates willing to work for it. Associates would like more than 50 pro bono hours to count as billable but applaud the firm’s dedication to pro bono work and its diversity efforts, which are reaping results.
