Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
Hiring at Orrick focuses largely on laterals, although the firm does have a summer associate program. The firm looks for candidates who embody the firm’s creative spirit and possess excellent academic and professional credentials. Because of the firm’s hiring strategy, laterals integrate smoothly and hit the ground running. The firm’s culture is collegial and welcoming with a relaxed in-office vibe and opportunities to socialize without pressure to do so. Partners treat associates with respect and are generous with feedback, and firm leadership is transparent. Associates find the 1,950 bonus-eligible hours requirement to be reasonable, and they appreciate the flexibility that they are afforded. Compensation is in line with the market with additional merit bonuses for high billers and incentive bonuses for regular time entry. Small teams mean that junior attorneys receive substantive work. Technology is an area in which the firm excels; Orrick is actively developing AI and other tools to improve efficiency. Wellness is supported through counseling and reimbursement for wellness activities and its commitment to providing flexible working arrangements and 40 hours of creditable “unplug” time for eligible associates to take a vacation. Formal training includes sessions every six months and on-demand webinars and CLEs through Learn@Orrick, and formal and informal mentorship is encouraged. Equity partnership is achievable, and counsel roles and career associate positions are available. Associates at Orrick have excellent exit opportunities, including with its tech clients.
