About Porter Hedges LLP

Operating out of offices in Houston and Oklahoma City, Porter Hedges is particularly well known for its energy (oil and gas) practice. But the firm represents companies of all sizes on a range of matters, including private equity, venture capital, real estate finance, M&A, and dispute resolution.

A Houston Essential

In 1981, nine partners from three different Houston firms came together to form what was then known as Porter & Clements. The firm recruited aggressively right out of the gate, and it quickly grew to 20 attorneys in its first year. After developing a name for itself as a leading firm in the oil and gas industries, the firm opened its Oklahoma City office in 2014 to focus on even better serving those clients. Porter Hedges remains a leading Houston firm; its name can even be found at the University of Houston Law Center, which is home to the Porter Hedges LLP Career Services Center.

Energized by Energy

Porter Hedges has experience representing clients in upstream and midstream oil and gas transactions worth up to billions. The firm serves clients like production companies, MLPs, oilfield service companies, reservoir engineering firms, commercial banks, mezzanine lenders, natural gas storage companies advising on such areas as mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and financing. The firm also counsels clients working toward alternate and sustainable energy solutions.

As a full-service firm, Porter Hedges has plenty of expertise beyond the energy industry. The firm has a top-notch construction law practice and works with all relevant parties, including contractors, lenders, and suppliers. The firm’s corporate practice serves companies of all sizes—from startups to Fortune 100 companies—at all stages of a business, from formation to corporate governance to mergers and acquisitions. Porter Hedges also has an experienced litigation team that handles all manners of disputes, from intellectual property to securities to products liability. It also represents parties in alternate dispute resolution and has domestic and international experience in front of the American Arbitration Association and the International Chamber of Commerce.

Girl Power

Among its many diversity initiatives, the firm’s dedication to female attorneys is perhaps the most prominent. As part of its Women’s Initiative, the firm fosters women empowerment through guest speakers, roundtable discussions, and sponsored presentations and partners with local and national women’s organizations. Porter Hedges also practices what it preaches. According to the firm, recent summer associate classes have been predominantly women, half of the firm’s associates are women, and one-third of partner promotions in recent years have been women.
