Sheppard Mullin

Our Survey Says

Sheppard Mullin has grown exponentially in size since its founding as a two-person shop in 1927, but that growth hasn’t gone to the firm’s head, so to speak. Proud to be a Los Angeles native, Sheppard Mullin retains a strong California identity even with offices across the country and around the world. The firm also holds tight to its small-firm origins, literally as well as figuratively—from the firm’s selective hiring process focusing as much on fit as on academics and its relatively small summer class size to its culture, which associates describe as “small firm” and “familial.” Partners are highly respectful of associates and express appreciation for their contributions, going above and beyond to provide feedback in the interest of learning and growth. Associates are impressed by management’s transparency, including “tours” by leadership and HR in which associates are welcome to express their input—and even more notably, they feel heard. Speaking of impressed, that’s one word to describe how associates feel about compensation at Sheppard Mullin; salary matches market, but bonuses often go above and beyond, both for higher billers as well as discretionary. Remarkably, associates do not feel overburdened by hours in exchange for this generous compensation, with many praising the emphasis on work-life balance and flexibility (although talk of a mandatory three days in the office policy elicits some grumbles). Contributing to associate satisfaction is billable credit for 40 hours of rest and relaxation, which also sets a positive tone regarding wellness. Formal training leaves something to be desired, although improvements are visible on the horizon. Associates feel that partnership is a very real possibility, particularly given that many current Sheppard Mullin partners began their careers at the firm.

Sheppard Mullin is a full-service AmLaw 100 firm with more than 1,000 attorneys in 16 offices worldwide.

We pride ourselves on valuing and cultivating what we think matters most: people—our colleagues, our clients, and the larger communities in which we operate.

We are proud of our culture, which emphasizes civility and teamwork, and we strive to maintain a collegial and inclusive environment where lawyers want to be.   We hold multiple annual retreats to create and strengthen bonds across offices and practices.  We encourage well-being, putting our money where our mouth is through our associate Unplug & Recharge Program, access to Lyra Health and Wellness, and our generous parental baby-bonding leave policies, among other innovative initiatives.

Our commitment to attorney growth and development is an integral part of our strategic plan.  We realize not all attorneys want to become partner, so our Career Advisory Program provides confidential coaching for those who seek non-partner or in-house opportunities.

Our clients are not only business partners but also part of our professional family.  Client service is in our DNA which is why we are consistently ranked among BTI Consulting’s Most Recommended Law Firms list.

Our commitment to the larger community is evidenced by our pro bono work; our Impact Initiative, which allows the Sheppard Mullin family to improve our communities through charitable donations as well as volunteering; and our partnerships with our clients and D&I-focused organizations to drive diversity and inclusion progress in the legal and larger business communities and within the firm.
