Simpson Thacher

Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Whether you want an exceptional work environment with supportive partners or do not want a billable hour requirement, look no further than Simpson Thacher. Typical recruits academically excel at T14 or top local schools. Successful candidates are personable and thus mesh well with their kind, cordial, courteous, and collaborative coworkers. People at Simpson like each other. Partners embrace accessibility and open-door policies, and they value interactions with associates and encourage the exchange of ideas. Partners are great teachers and mentors, too. This investment by partners combined with the STBReady program and other vibrant training resources makes associates feel well-prepared to be top-notch attorneys. Challenging, level-appropriate work assignments are the norm, and associates are encouraged to assume additional responsibilities. Central staffing supports the fair distribution of projects. The absence of a billable hour requirement relieves associates from the burden and added stress of billables, which enhances work-life balance. Compensation is at the market rate and lockstep, which provides peace of mind and predictability but disappoints high billers. Office technology has improved but could be better, but associates appreciate the stipend for at-home setups. A wide array of wellness initiatives are offered, but nothing noteworthy stands out. An active pro bono department encourages work in interesting projects, and no limit is placed on the hours that associates can dedicate to these matters. The office vibe is diverse, supportive, and accepting, and many affinity groups and various activities have been established. The path to equity partnership is long and difficult, but counsel and non-equity partner positions appear more easily attainable. The Simpson Thacher experience leads to external options at other firms and in-house.
