Once an Oregonian, Always an Oregonian
Tonkon Torp's roots remain in Oregon. In 1974, Moe Tonkon and Morris Galen joined forces with then- Stoel Rives attorney Frederick Torp and four other founding partners to form the law firm that would eventually come to be known as Tonkon Torp LLP. Other notable founders include Brian G. Booth and Don Marmaduke. A fervent literary arts advocate, Booth created the Oregon Book Awards, Oregon Literary Fellowships, and Literary Arts organizations; co-founded the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission; and served as the first chairman of the Oregon Parks Commission Marmaduke notably joined the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in 1965, traveling to Mississippi to take on unpopular and dangerous civil rights cases. Booth and Marmaduke together helped establish Tonkon Torp as a community-forward, pro-bono-centric firm from the very outset. Another remarkable founder was Terry Baker, a member of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and winner of the 1962 Heisman Trophy for his achievements during the 1962 season playing at Oregon State University.
