VAULT'S VERDICT:
Vinson & Elkins recruits associates from T15 law schools and schools in cities with hiring offices—especially those in Texas—with excellent academic performance, work experience, and an interest in energy, infrastructure, and finance law, including transactional and litigation. People in the office are collegial and respectful, and they enjoy socializing both organically and at firm-sponsored events, many of which are designed to encourage attorneys at different levels to interact. Partners treat associates as equals and care about them personally and professionally. They also take the lead in welcoming and mentoring associates, teaching them and encouraging them to take control of their legal careers. Intensive training is provided during the onboarding process and thereafter through bootcamps and CLEs. Laterals are immersed in firm life through interoffice visits and social activities. Associates receive cutting-edge and challenging work assignments, and they have support to push beyond their experience levels. Vinson & Elkins sets a 1,900-hour billable requirement, which includes up to 150 pro bono, business development, or other firm citizenship/legal development hours, and compensation matches the prevailing BigLaw rate. Firm technology reflects the latest developments in AI programs and provides the same technology used in the office for remote work. Wellness is promoted by healthy snacks, financial incentives for health checkups, and overall work-life balance. Dedicated pro bono counsel heavily promotes work, and more than 100 hours can count toward supplemental bonuses. Career advancement within the firm is straightforward, with counsel and equity partner realistic opportunities. Exit options include lateraling to other firms or going in-house.
