Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
Vinson & Elkins’ foundation in Texas permeates who it is, from top-notch work in energy sectors to a notably hospitable firm culture. The hiring process emphasizes graduates of T14 and Texas law schools, with good grades, journal and clerkship experience, and well-rounded, pleasant candidates. People are friendly and laid back at work and at social events, while partners are approachable, solicit and provide feedback, and care about associates’ development. Formal training and mentorship programs are helpful, but more beneficial is the hands-on guidance associates receive from senior attorneys. Better organization and efforts would be nice when orienting lateral hires. Work assignments range from basic to substantive and cutting edge, with additional responsibilities available to those willing to take them on. Vinson & Elkins associates get projects on the free market system, though some get work based on ability and familiarity with certain partners or clients. Quality of life is possible with a fair 2,000-hour billable requirement, with additional bonuses available at 2,150 and 2,300 hours. Associates like that compensation overall matches the market. Firm tech is satisfactory, while IT support is responsive and helpful. A wellness staff ensures there are plenty of offerings; otherwise, the firm’s easygoing attitude helps mitigate some of the stressors of BigLaw life. Pro bono is a firm strength, as the work is supported even though creditable hours dropped from unlimited to 100. Associates recognize diversity efforts in programming but see deficiencies in certain underrepresented groups among associates and partners. The firm’s strong alumni network helps with external placements in-house, to other firms, and to the government if associates don’t make partner—which is possible but difficult to do—or become counsel.
