Dating Back

Weintraub Tobin’s roots date back to 1852, making it California’s oldest law firm and the oldest west of the Mississippi. Richard Tobin started his law practice in San Francisco representing clients like Hibernia Savings and Loan Society and the first archbishop of San Francisco, Joseph Sadoc Aleman. (The Archdiocese continues to be a firm client to this day.)

Meanwhile, in 1978, a group of lawyers broke away from Sacramento’s largest firm, Downey Brand, to form Weintraub Genshlea Chediak. The Weintraub firm grew to more than 40 lawyers when it merged with Tobin & Tobin in 2012. Weintraub Tobin has continued to grow over the past several years, and today it is home to more than 70 lawyers.

With practices covering everything from banking and finance to trusts and estates, Weintraub Tobin’s experience is wide ranging. The firm’s lawyers work in various industries, including agribusiness, entertainment and media, financial institutions, food and hospitality, manufacturing, nonprofit organizations, real estate, retail, and transportation.

Weintraub Tobin boasts a strong litigation practice, with around half of the firm’s lawyers focusing on the area. The firm’s litigators handle disputes relating to business and corporate, employment, intellectual property, real estate, and more—and the firm is home to experienced trial lawyers. On the transactional side, Weintraub Tobin represents a range of clients, including investors, startups, large and small companies, and nonprofits. The firm has a dedicated Tax Group but also takes a cross-practice approach through which tax lawyers help clients across the firm’s practices. Another area of note for the firm is its Real Estate practice—the firm’s real estate attorneys have had an impact throughout California, assisting with transactions, financings, and more.
