White & Case hires candidates through direct applications, and given the firm’s strong global culture, international exposure and language skills are considered (though not required). Associates characterize the firm’s culture as respectful and collegial, and they point to the opportunity to socialize for those who want it but without obligation for those who don’t. The atmosphere of respect extends to partners, who encourage associates to take ownership of their work early in their careers, value junior attorney input, and provide regular feedback. Junior associates interact with clients on calls, and as associates build trust, they earn greater responsibility. The firm provides structured training delivered by more-senior attorneys and partners. It also has a formal mentorship program for first-year associates, with additional informal mentoring opportunities available for those who seek them out. The firm pays market compensation and has a 2,000 billable hour requirement to earn a bonus, which includes 250 hours of pro bono and other firm-related work. Associates learn whether they are on track for partnership by their seventh year at the firm. Counsel roles are available, and exiting to the government or in-house with clients is common. Valued benefits include free meals and a work-from-home stipend.
