VAULT'S VERDICT:
For international work and experiences, White & Case is a global leader. Hiring considerations include strong academic credentials, law school attended, language skills, and an interest in cross-border work. Office settings are diverse, collaborative, and professional, and people understand the need for family time. Partners are respectful and appreciative of associate work, and they engage with associates as colleagues and equals. A wide range of mentors provide professional support for associates, and firm training programs, including those offered during career milestones, are robust and helpful. Strong training and team support also make laterals feel appropriately onboarded. Work assignments are challenging, and associates have the opportunity to stretch into more difficult work as they feel able. White & Case observes a reasonable 2,000-hour billable requirement, with up to 250 hours of pro bono and DEI hours attributable to the total. Salaries match the top market scale, and high billable hours mean the chance for above-market bonuses. Firm technology is updated and efficient, with some clear movement in the use of AI. Significant offerings are available to address employees’ physical health, mental well-being, and nutrition. A dedicated pro bono team is committed to helping attorneys find projects to reach—and even exceed—the 20-hour target. Firm diversity efforts are particularly strong in terms of hiring, programming, and affinity groups, which makes sense given the firm’s global standing. Although making equity partner may take some time, counsel and non-equity positions appear more readily available. External options include the government and in-house positions, including those with international clients.
