Womble Bond Dickinson is a firm with a long, storied history that it celebrates. The culture is warm, collegial, and social, and the partners treat associates very well, though associates would appreciate improvement in messaging around firm changes and transparency leading up to such changes. Associates report a great deal of flexibility and a below-average billable hour requirement with good work-life balance. They are compensated somewhat below market, in what most feel is a fair trade. Work is said to be substantive, varied, and fulfilling, and the firm’s technology is flawless for remote work and good enough on all other fronts. The firm offers some specific, tailored wellness efforts, such as support for mental and physical health as well as things like executive coaching to advance associate careers. Mentorship is organic and very useful, but the formal training structures could use some investment, particularly beyond orientation and the first-year program. Partnership is realistic for associates who can learn to generate revenue, and the firm allows 50 hours of pro bono work to be credited to associate billable totals. The firm receives high marks for diversity, with particular praise given to the affinity groups and the firm’s support for them.
