Vault’s Verdict

Insiders at Sia characterize the firm’s atmosphere as dynamic, fast-paced, and rewarding—a natural home for proactive self-starters. The firm operates with a flat hierarchy, with open communication between junior consultants and leaders facilitated by teambuilding and wellness events. Insiders describe the firm as entrepreneurial and appreciate that they feel heard when they share new ideas.

The firm’s entrepreneurial nature can be a challenge for some. Insiders say that although the firm offers formal development, consultants must seek these opportunities out internally. The firm offers international opportunities, but similarly, you must advocate to participate in them. Travel and in-office work requirements are driven by clients, not the firm, and leadership strives to balance tough assignments with space to rest and recharge.

Insiders share mixed opinions about the firm’s compensation. They generally find their base salaries satisfactory, with good progression upon promotions, and they appreciate the firm’s use of a salary grid to drive pay equality within role levels. A mobility budget provides another good perk. However, many see the firm’s bonuses as small, and most agree that the firm rarely pays out full bonuses. Nonetheless, with the firm performing well—even despite economic headwinds in continental Europe—Sia is a great place to build a consulting career.

Employee Reviews

Firm Culture

  • “Environment is very open, transparent, and direct. Processes are structured, and leadership allows for a beneficial and constructive conversation and discussion. Career development opportunities are encouraged and facilitated.”
  • “You get a lot of freedom as long as you are delivering. There is a lot of trust in the consultants, and we try to give them that responsibility to stand out and improve on a daily basis.”
  • “Work is hard and fast but rewarding. You’re challenged every day, learning what is happening and changing in the world. Context shifting can be difficult, but it is an exciting time.”
  • “We have a relatively young and dynamic corporate culture. Team events and wellness initiatives are often promoted, contributing to a good overall atmosphere within the teams. The firm has a less formal and hierarchical approach than some of its more traditional competitors.”

Quality of Life

  • “Travel requirements depends on the assignment. I’ve had a full remote assignment for six months and another one that required three days a week away, every two weeks. Easy to take time off, but two weeks off in August and one week off in December are mandatory, meaning the consultant cannot bill an assignment during that time. Good work-life balance.”
  • “The best aspect of my company in terms of quality of life are the proximity to managers, who are very accessible; the respect for work-life balance; and the overall good atmosphere in the office.”
  • “The firm promotes a good work-life balance by being generally respectful of time off and supportive when personal matters arise. There is also some flexibility in organizing working hours, which makes it easier to manage workload. High-intensity periods still exist, especially around deadlines, but this is common in the industry.”
  • “I think Sia provides an incredible balance for quality of life. Leadership is conscious and aware of intense periods and rewards high quality outputs during intense periods with days off and days to rest. Taking time off is incredibly comfortable, as long as it aligns with client expectations.”

Career Development

  • “There is a new mentoring program established across the different offices, which I believe is a good first attempt for this kind of training.”
  • “A good variety of functional training for each level, but most of them as e-learning. International mobility was frozen when I arrived but started again slowly for a few months, with a good range of locations around the world, but not all of them with all sectorial capabilities. Promotions: good rhythm of progression and possibility to fast track.”
  • “Investment in strategic internal projects. Guidance and support in taking on management roles as consultants. Consultants are given considerable autonomy to choose their internal topics and work on business development initiatives.”
  • “Informal training and mentoring are generally good.”

Compensation

  • “Salary progression is clear and transparent.”
  • “Pretty good salary and good progression from one step to the next. We’re on a salary grid system, so it’s very transparent and there is no actual salary negotiation, which I think promotes greater equality.”
  • “Best aspects are mobility budget and being able to expense train tickets on top of that.”
  • “Lots of exercise programs available (with internal and external coaches). Our medical assurance is top-tier and covers almost everything (optical, dental, etc.).”

Inclusion

  • “We have an internal and invested in structure that covers seven themes, including SiaMe, Women at Sia, Environmental, Pride & Allies, and Culture, to name a few. We are backing important issues and had 50 events last year alone in our offices.”
  • “I have seen the company act very positively where issues have arisen. There are regular events, and the diversity in the office is good (particularly from a gender perspective). Across the hub there’s diversity of race, genders, and sexualities.”
  • “From what I see and experience, I believe the company respects and values inclusion in the workforce with regard to women, race, and ethnicity.”
  • “A lot of help for pregnant women so that they’re not penalized in their career progression.”

Business Outlook

  • “Some business units are doing very well (double-digit growth). Premium positioning compared to other consulting companies.”
  • “High adoption of AI and integration in your daily work. Well positioned in the energy industry in the Netherlands, with plenty of room for organic growth.”
  • “Managers have a good understanding of the market. The challenge is to put this into practice and radically transform the role of the consultant in line with the rise of generative AI and the accompanying technological upheaval.”
  • “Blackstone's entry is a strong signal of a major transformation phase for the firm, aimed at taking it to another level for a lucrative resale a few years later. The firm’s culture could become more performance- and profitability-oriented.”

Hiring Process

  • “Three interviews are being done. First is an HR interview, then a business case, and finally, a meeting with a director or a partner.”
  • “Interview and callback process is straightforward and seamless, especially if your qualifications and experience match the role the firm is recruiting for.”
  • “We are looking for young, enthusiastic and committed consultants with a bright mindset focusing on delivering excellence to our clients. We require experts in all kinds of business and appreciate industry-specific knowledge. Our ideal candidate is fluent in two or three languages and has good social communication skills.”
  • “Motivated, enthusiastic, with affinity for the energy sector and the energy transition. Able to deliver a structured and comprehensive storyline in limited time with a confident attitude.”

Interview Questions

  • “Business case: You get a problem and three solutions. Choose the best solution and explain why. After this, choose the second and third best option.”
  • “What motivates you? Why Sia? What are you strengths and weakness? Situational Questions. I interviewed for a grad position with Sia.”
  • “What financial implications does the introduction of renewables into the electricity mix have on energy producers?”
  • “Build a standard architecture for a data platform. Assess the suitability of a commercial MDM solution rather than an in-house solution. What is your vision for the role of the consultant of the future?”

Uppers

  • “Innovation and entrepreneurship.”
  • “Inclusive environment, promotion policies, culture, rather horizontal structure.”
  • “The management is excellent, the clients and assignments are prestigious, and the company’s strategic vision is clear and ambitious.”
  • “Autonomie et confiance.”

Downers

  • “Fear of being on the bench.”
  • “Lack of knowledge management.”
  • “Work balance between client and internal work.”
  • “Some missions are often very long (over a year)”
