Career Development Review

In general the review and promotion processes in YCPS are perhaps the most transparent that I've seen anywhere. Everyone is made aware of everybody else's review scores, strengths and areas for development, so it's easy to understand why one person is promoted whereas another is not. Everyone also gets to pick their own reviewers every time (up to 8 for non-Partners), subject to their supervisor's approval, so it's as well-rounded as it can get. The CEO additionally makes it a point to do 1on1 sessions with all middle management members and up and small group sessions with juniors from all office to discuss how they can work on their areas for development. I personally appreciate this hands-on method and hope the CEO never gets tired of it!

With regard to diversity, I have no complaints. We are in so many countries and have local employees in every single office. In the office where I'm at, we have an almost 50-50 male-female ratio, we have the females as office leaders, and we have LGBT representation. No age discrimination happens, additionally. You can be Partner in your 20s--you can manage huge portfolios at any age. Everyone is treated equally and every organizational movement is merit-based. On the down-side, I think we still don't have enough women in top management, but we're all actively working on that!

Finally, on training opportunities. There are organization-wide initiatives, such as the New Joiner Training which is held quarterly in Hong Kong and region-wide trainings during the regional offsites, however - I'm not sure if these are the best ones. What I personally consider as best are those that are initiated by the office managers themselves as they're often more tailored and value-adding. In our office, specifically, the Partner-in-Charge of our office conducts training whenever he's in town and that is every 3 weeks. In addition to that, there's always the cross-border mentoring arrangements, on-the-job learning, and other more modern formats (i.e. 30-min virtual knowledge sharing sessions by PMs across 3+ offices, or 15-min book review presentations by Analysts which are likewise streamed across Southeast Asia).
