Working as a cantor is both a religious calling and the fulfillment of one’s personal desire to serve others and, as such, most cantors say that they enjoy their jobs. There is no such thing as a standard workweek. In addition to leading the musical liturgies, cantors at some synagogues assist with religious education, officiate at weddings, comfort the sick and dying, and counsel congregants who are facing various life challenges. Because they have such busy schedules, a cantor may find it hard to balance his or her work responsibilities with family life.
