The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) predicts a rapid decline in employment for postal clerks through 2028 because of technological developments, including automation and electronic sorting devices, use of private delivery companies, and e-mail. Currently, the U.S. Postal Service does very little hiring of any positions. One notable exception was the global coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak of early 2020, during which thousands of new employees (including many temporary positions) were needed to replace workers affected by the pandemic.
