McCarthy's Intern Advantage program treats participants as functioning members of project teams from the outset of their assignment. Interns take on responsibilities tied to active construction projects, working alongside engineers, superintendents, and other construction professionals across functions including project engineering, preconstruction, field operations, and craft work. Interns are also introduced to site safety practices as part of their onboarding.
The program supports multi-year participation, with some students returning for several consecutive summers before graduation, gaining progressively greater responsibility with each return. Because McCarthy is an employee-owned company, interns are also introduced to the ownership culture that shapes how projects and teams operate, including an emphasis on accountability and long-term thinking.
