The summer internship program’s strongest emphasis is on meaningful work, and is centered around experiential learning, project delivery, and leadership development. This experiential learning culminates in interns' signature projects geared towards "finding their purpose" at work and making a direct impact within the teams they support. Interns spend the summer building their skills while working on real-world projects with significant impact. Whether you're an undergraduate student working towards graduation or an M.D. completing your board certification, Centene can help students find their purpose while building their career. 

Internships are located throughout many departmental disciplines at Centene - including IT, Finance, Business Operations, Marketing, Communications, Human Resources, Internal Audit/Compliance, and more. Examples of common internship positions are listed below:

Graduate/Undergraduate Software Developer Intern: Design, build, test, and maintain scalable and stable-off-the-shelf application or custom-built technology solutions to meet business needs.

  • Learn various job functions within the managed care industry and explore various career opportunities.
  • Apply academic knowledge and learn new skills by contributing to various projects.
  • Research various legal, regulatory, and other topics within functional area and industry.
  • Attend training and development presentations to enhance professional competencies.
  • Learn about various processes and functions within the Managed Care industry and develop professionally by contributing to projects that support the business.
  • Understanding of any of the following: COBOL, JAVA, Angular, JSP, Supertool, PL/SQL, UNIX shell scripting, C#, ASP.Net, Java Script, Object Oriented Programming and design concepts, XML, SQL, HTML, CSS.

Data Science Intern: Perform tasks required to implement predictive modeling features as software, including building artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and statistical models; packaging, deploying, integrating, and supporting AI/ML models; and building platforms and processes to facilitate the development of AI/ML models by others.

  • Learn various job functions within the Managed Care industry and explore various career opportunities.
  • Apply academic knowledge and learn new skills by contributing to various projects.
  • Research various legal, regulatory, and other topics within functional area and industry.
  • Attend training and development presentations to enhance professional competencies.

Financial Analyst Intern: Team projects/activities that the intern could be involved with:

  • Perform all month-end accounting functions for the Corporate IT group
  • Compile consolidated and detailed reporting packages
  • Prepare financial budgets and forecast
  • Own the IT Funding Request approval process
  • AdHoc financial analysis
  • Compilation of business cases for IT purchases
  • Learn various job functions within the Managed Care industry and explore various career opportunities
  • Apply academic knowledge and learn new skills by contributing to various projects
  • Research various legal, regulatory, and other topics within functional area and industry
  • Attend training and development presentations to enhance professional competencies

Actuarial Intern: The intern will support various state and local actuarial/financial reporting standards (used for overall program evaluation, MLR (Medical Loss Ratio reporting) and Rate Setting data/reporting, ensuring our plans remain efficient, compliant and promote the well-being of members we serve.

  • The Actuarial Intern will work for the Actuarial Services department supporting the health care field related to Medicaid actuarial reporting to the States and/or delegated actuarial consultants.  The internship will allow the selected students to learn actuarial concepts including medical expense categorization, reserving and modeling. Interns who are working towards an actuarial designation will gain hands-on actuarial experience on modeling and technical skills in coding (SQL).
  • The Company offers a dynamic and fast-paced work environment with strong support providing the necessary skills for an actuarial role in the health field.  The direct manager will be an industry expert that will provide knowledge, training and mentoring. The manager will expect focus, willingness to learn, and someone who drives for results. The interns will receive individualized training for the projects they will be tasked with and should expect to significantly expand their skillset during the internship. Interns will receive industry-specific training as well as basic to intermediate software training from departmental peers as part of the program.  In addition, there will be weekly training in many finance areas of the company.

Number of Interns: 101 or more
Compensation/Benefits: Paid; All internships within the Summer Intern Experience are paid. Hourly pay rates are determined by a variety of factors: level in school, previous experience, internship position, etc.
Duration: 6 to 12 weeks; The Summer Intern Experience is a 12-week program beginning Mid-May and ending the first week of August. Part-time internships are available in some situations for those that wish to stay on and work throughout the school year.
