“It's pretty good”
July 2020FORMER STUDENT
Uppers

I'd never lived in the snow before, and HLS shut down for a blizzard one of my years. Once I learned to wear thermal underwear every day between November and March, it was great.

Downers

The incredible, heaping, massive pile of debt that I'm saddled with.

Comments

If you can get in, it's probably worth it. If another very good school will give you financial aid, take it.

incredible opportunities; amazing teachers; access to everything you could need to succeed

Downers

1L classes are large and do not feel personalized; can be easy to get lost in the crowd

Comments

HLS is an incredible opportunity and opens doors throughout your career

“Study Hard, Play Hard”

The atmosphere is super cooperative, everyone is very smart and trying to succeed in this cut-throat profession.

Downers

The workload is a lot and expect to stay up multiple nights cramming for your exams!

Comments

I would tell them that by attending Harvard Law, they'll instantly become attractive to many top law firms and they can expect good career opportunities in the future due to HLS's prestige.

fantastic law school experience with endless opportunity. you're spending time learning how the law should function rather than just what the law currently is.

Downers

it can be intimidating when you realize the caliber of your classmates, and there is some clique mentality that you have to push through

Comments

the loans are absolutely not a joke. i wouldn't trade harvard for a lower tier firm, but if you have scholarships at a peer school, the harvard name is not worth a lifetime of debt.

“Senseless Competition”

Uppers

There are some truly caring faculty who want to work with you on pushing the boundaries of the law - they are few and far between though.

Downers

Senseless reaching for the next best thing without any real purpose behind it. People are competing just to get the next prestigious internship, job, etc., and it causes a lot of needless toxic stress and anxiety.

Comments

If you get a full ride or good money to another T14, don't go here. The debt is not worth the name unless you are hoping for SCOTUS, which let's be honest - is a long shot.

“Amazing School”

I like the Harvard name the best, as it's the best school.

Downers

It is a tough school, and a lot of smart people are there.

Comments

You should study hard and be responsible and organized to survive.

“Great school, easy to get lost in the masses”
March 2019FORMER STUDENT
Uppers

The professors and (most) of the students are amazing. It's very easy to find a professor to connect with and build a strong relationship with for future references/recommendations. The administration is committed to student success.

Downers

It's very easy to get lost in the masses because the school is one of the biggest law schools in the country. Each incoming 1L class is 500+ students, and then there are a lot of non-JD students too. You really have to look out for yourself and reach out to resources because the number of students means that resources are only available upon request. Old money feel wasn't great either.

Comments

Despite its size and old money feel, I wholeheartedly recommend the school because it will be only the beginning of an amazing legal (or non-legal) career.

“The best of the best”

Uppers

Your classmates will be brilliant and your professors will be the best in their field.

Downers

The school is expensive and the weather could be better.

Comments

Take advantage of all the events put on by Harvard and HLS in particular. When you're practicing, you won't have time to explore.

“Great school!”
June 2018FORMER STUDENT
Uppers

Excellent academics, great professors, but the best part is the brilliant, friendly students.

Downers

Not much to say here - there is something for everyone.

Comments

First year can be tough, but get excited because it will likely be a great three years.

“Overpriced”
May 2018FORMER STUDENT

A solid legal education, and an environment of brilliant people.

Downers

A high pressure, high anxiety environment that can leave you with nightmares.

Comments

Think long and hard before signing 20 years of student loan payments.
