“Great environment, strong academics”
December 2019FORMER STUDENT

People here are friendly, professors are accessible, students are very intelligent. I love being able to take classes at other schools as well.

Downers

There is still a high level of competition. And everything at Stanford expensive. What I like the least about it, however, is that Stanford/Palo Alto is like a "bubble", very small, not much to do.

Comments

I would definitely recommend buying a bike. It's the easiest way to get around on campus.

Has some stellar IP faculty - Mark Lemley and Paul Goldstein to name a few.

Downers

For a school known for its IP curriculum, it has a limited number of IP related courses for offer. Columbia Law School, for instance, seems to have a lot more practitioners offer courses than at SLS.

Comments

Best campus ever! The small class size really makes a huge difference. You'll actually get to know your classmates and will actually like them!

“Amazing Law School Experience”

Small class sizes, diverse class offerings, collegial atmosphere, great mentorship opportunities

Downers

The quarter system - it makes everything from the 1L summer job hunt to bar preparation more difficult

Small is great in a lot of ways. Access to professors, leadership positions, and jobs is all increased by competing with fewer fellow classmates. The smaller size also makes people kinder to one another and creates a small town-like atmosphere. The weather/campus/location also really enhances quality of life, especially if you enjoy outdoor activities.

Downers

Being on the West Coast you can feel isolated from the other elite schools and the key markets of NY and DC. Small also isn't great in other ways - fewer classmates, professors, classes, etc. Also, SF is somewhat of a trek and Palo Alto is expensive while lacking nightlife/culture.

Comments

I can't imagine a place where it's easier to go to law school. You have every opportunity imaginable while still having a laid back lifestyle.

“Best law school education in the best possible area in U.S.”
January 2016FORMER STUDENT
Uppers

1. Top class faculty and student body

2. Top class research opportunities

3. Collegiate atmosphere

Downers

1. Career support system could be improved

2. Social life can be limited in suburban California

Comments

The school is one of the most generous when it comes to financial aid, whether you are an international student or not. I was very appreciative that SLS offered me a generous aid.

“Excellence and Collegiality”

Small class size; excellence of classmates combined with down-to-earth demeanor.

Downers

Nothing; I did not "not like" anything about Stanford Law School

Comments

It would be very difficult to be at Stanford without having a car of some kind, as it is in a quite suburban location. You can do it, but the experience will be circumscribed.

“Great Law School, Small class sizes, good clinic options”
May 2015FORMER STUDENT
Uppers

I loved the size of the school and classes - there is a real opportunity to get to know your classmates and teachers well. I also found the emphasis on clinical teaching to be an asset, and encourage all students to take advantage of it.

Downers

Small school comes with a certain level of snootiness - makes it harder sometimes to find people you genuinely can connect with.

Comments

I don't think you can go wrong choosing Stanford. The name can very much carry you far in your career, and there is a good alumni database as well.

2010VERIFIED STUDENT
Quality of Life

Unparalleled. I think there's really no context in deciding between Stanford and Harvar or anywhere else. The decision is a lifestyle choice between whether you'll be more happy at Yale or Stanford. Visit both, and decide where you feel most comfortable.

Admissions

Excellent financial aid, convinced me to come across the country. In admissions, there's clearly more of a focus on the whole individual rather than simply numbers. Rightly, I think, Dean Deal's office looks for people who will go on to lead the legal profession, even if their LSAT isn't stratospheric. This may have cost them some ground in the U.S. News rankings the last couple years, but it's a well-conceived long-term strategy. It also ensures that the student body is full of interesting people.
