During the course of your career you’ll find that job satisfaction is sometimes directly linked to the leadership team. Great leaders inspire and teach their team, and they take responsibility for their own actions. Less effective leaders might place blame on their team or attempt to take credit for their team’s work. Today we’re going to be talking about some of the characteristics of great leaders. Let’s begin.

Resilience

The workplace can be unpredictable. From shifting deadlines to team members calling out sick during a major project, a good leader has to know how to deal with changing circumstances. In moments of uncertainty, a leader who can quickly adapt and overcome unforeseen challenges will inspire their team to press on. If you’re looking to level up your resilience, make the effort to step outside of your comfort zone and take on some new challenges.

Courage

It takes courage to be resilient in the face of change. Indeed, great leaders are often courageous individuals who aren’t afraid to speak up or make difficult decisions. Along with this, courageous leaders allow their team to speak freely, and are open to new ideas and methods of approach. Having courage is all about facing fears and doing what’s right, and it’s important to remember that even the most courageous people aren’t absolutely fearless—they just choose to confront new challenges despite any fears they may have.

Self-Awareness

An ineffective leader can often seem like the proverbial bull in a glass factory. The old expression might conjure up images of a bumbling, clumsy oaf of a leader, but a lack of self-awareness is no laughing matter. All great leaders have the ability to look inward and acknowledge their strengths and shortcomings, often relying on their team to fill in the gaps when necessary. They are also able to admit when they’ve made a mistake, and they’re acutely aware of how others view them.

Effective Communication

Good communication is incredibly important in the workplace. In the absence of effective communication, instructions can be misconstrued, important details are overlooked or ignored, and mistakes are made. A great leader is well-spoken, direct, and can express complex ideas in a way that everyone can understand. They are also good listeners, and their team members should feel comfortable approaching them with any questions or concerns, which brings us to our next entry.

Empathy

Empathetic individuals are able to understand and share the feelings of those around them. A strong leader can connect with their team on a human level, and can provide support during difficult situations. When a leader and their team can relate to one another, stronger bonds are formed, and trust is built. This leads to increased employee engagement, and a team that is collectively motivated to succeed. Empathetic leaders do their homework, and strive to understand the unique perspectives of each of their team members.

Mental Agility

A good leader doesn’t have to know everything, but they should always seek to gain more knowledge and improve upon any weaknesses they may have. The ability to learn quickly is incredibly important for a leader, and people who are always learning make the best leaders. Empathetic leaders will also recognize the fact that they can learn from their team, and are open to suggestions and input.

Creativity

The best leaders are creative thinkers. They can approach complex problems from a variety of angles, and are able to develop new and innovative solutions on the fly. Creative leaders consider all the possibilities, and find ways to improve processes and increase productivity. Along with this, they encourage creativity in the workplace, and appreciate new methods and unique perspectives.

Strategic Thinking

All of the characteristics mentioned above won’t mean a thing without a solid vision for the future. Yes friends, the very best of leaders are able to identify new opportunities, anticipate challenges, and plan ahead. A good strategy is absolutely necessary for any team’s success, and a great leader knows this. They are able to articulate a clear vision to their team, while steering the ship accordingly.

A leader who displays most or all of these characteristics will undoubtedly inspire confidence among their team. In addition to this, the team will look to their leader as an example, and they will be motivated to succeed in both individual and collaborative endeavors.
