AZA hires academically impressive students from top law schools, focusing on candidates who want to pursue a career in civil litigation at a boutique firm, who show grit, and who can think on their feet. The firm is collegial and moderately social, with firm-sponsored events such as an annual retreat, social functions, and firmwide lunches. Associates say everyone helps each other find opportunities to advance their careers, and junior associates argue hearings, examine witnesses, and conduct depositions, with chances to steer case strategy early. The technology is adequate, and IT support receives high praise. The firm has a formal mentoring program, but partners and senior associates willingly offer mentorship and feedback, aligning with the firm’s prevalence of on-the-job learning. Attorneys work primarily in the office. AZA’s billable requirement is 2,100 hours per year, which includes approved pro bono hours. The firm pays above-market salaries to associates in good standing during their first two years and then market salaries starting in the third year. The firm offers above-market bonuses that can be even higher for people who bill over the requirement or otherwise show outstanding performance. Making non-equity or equity partner is realistic after approximately 8 to 10 years. Counsel and senior attorney roles are also available, as are in-house exit opportunities.
