VAULT'S VERDICT:
AZA might be small, but don’t underestimate this firm, because it is also mighty. A true litigation boutique, AZA is a powerhouse of a trial firm—and its lawyers want to win. Candidates who want to work here need to show that they share that sentiment; stellar credentials are important, but equally so is a true desire to try cases. Grit and determination are some of the qualities the firm prizes, so candidates should be prepared to demonstrate them in interviews. The firm’s culture is a big selling point for associates, who describe it as very social and filled with different personality types. In fact, the firm emphasizes the importance of personal style in effective advocacy, and partners are supportive of associates in helping them to develop their styles along with their skills. Associates are expected to contribute to their trial teams from day one and describe a steep curve of learning on the job, with minimal formal training. The 2,100 billable hour requirement is on the high end and associates work hard, but most find the hours manageable. Associates are thrilled to receive top NY-market salaries and have no trouble achieving bonus requirements, and the firm offers a special bonus for high billers (over 2,400 hours). Associates describe the work as top notch, with a satisfying variety of cases and significant early experience and responsibility. There are no formal wellness initiatives other than a free on-site gym, but associates feel that the firm generally supports wellbeing and mental health. Partnership is achievable, and associates feel that the elite skills they develop at AZA lend themselves to desirable exit options. There is no cap on pro bono hours, all of which count as billable. With respect to diversity, associates describe the firm as fairly diverse, welcoming, and inclusive.
