Our Survey Says
VAULT'S VERDICT:
Before Boies Schiller Flexner grants an interview, it knows the candidate can perform the work. Hiring top students from top law schools, many with clerkship experience, the firm prioritizes interpersonal skills, teamwork, culture fit, and interest in its mix of plaintiff-side and defense-side work. The atmosphere is casual and flexible, with a relaxed dress code and attendance requirement. Most social events are informal, but the firm organizes regular events to facilitate internal networking. Associates, including laterals, say they quickly meet everyone who works at the firm, including partners, who value their opinions on legal issues and strategy. Partners and senior associates provide mentorship and on-the-job training. Decentralized staffing allows associates to choose their projects and assignment partners. Lean teams create opportunities for client contact, depositions, and work above an associate’s class year. The firm lacks a billable hours requirement but expects associates to work at least 2,000 hours, with flexibility on when and where work is completed and firm technology that enables remote working. Pro bono hours count toward the bonus calculation with no cap. The firm’s formula compensation system means that associates in good standing earn a market base salary plus a bonus that is typically above-market, with opportunities for even higher bonuses. Promotion to income partner and subsequently to equity partner is realistic for associates who meet the firm’s criteria. Counsel roles are also available, as are exit opportunities to in-house litigation roles. Notable perks include an annual attorney retreat, generous parental leave, free lunches, and a portion of contingency fee awards for associates.
