Our Survey Says
- “Every week, all the summer associates would have a one-hour Zoom with a partner to discuss a different aspect of trial work. For assignments, I was given substantive work assignments as a summer associate, such as principally drafting motions. Other work consisted of research projects and drafting meet and confer letters.”
- “As a summer associate, the work you receive is substantive and valuable to the cause you’re working on. Firm leadership and program coordinators are intentional about providing meaningful work and opportunities to summer associates.”
- “Very much an ‘ask and you shall receive’ environment. I was able to take lead on drafting letter motions, witness prep sessions, and other substantive assignments as a first year.”
- “One of the reasons I agreed to summer at BSF was because I had heard that it provided a real taste of the feeling of being an associate, and I appreciated that I was given meaningful work to do on important cases.”
- “As a summer associate in the firm’s San Francisco office, the program coordinators provided great social events all summer. The activities included dinners, happy hours, escape rooms, boat tours, the theater, baseball games, and more!”
- “My favorite summer event might have been the admin partner dinner, since it was smaller and I felt like I got a feel for my future colleagues outside of work. But I had a great time doing actual work, like traveling for a hearing I had helped prepare.”
- “We would have an event one to two times a week and lunch every day. My favorite event was Topgolf.”
- “The social events were good. There was a good number of events, and they varied in type of activity. I had good social interactions with associates and partners. My summer class was very supportive, and there was good camaraderie among the summers.”
- “I was pleasantly surprised by being able to prepare for and attend a deposition during my summer [and] assist the partner who prepped the witness.”
- “My experience as an attorney has exceeded my expectations as a summer associate. First, the firm and partners were incredibly accommodating about allowing me to switch to the [a different] office, to be closer to home. Moreover, the work I’ve received, from the very first day, has been intellectually interesting.”
- “The hours are longer, but that was not unexpected. I think BSF is unique in how well it shows what being an attorney at the firm actually looks like to its summer associates. When I began as an associate the following year, I knew what to expect.”
- “Working at the firm has met my expectations. Associates are given a lot of freedom to choose the work they are interested in, and you get a mix of assignment types because teams are usually smaller.”
The Firm Says
Our summer associate program is a cornerstone of our talent pipeline, reflecting our investment in the next generation of exceptional lawyers. Our program provides hands-on experience in some of the most high-profile cases in the country and is designed to offer realistic exposure to the firm’s lawyers and clients. The small class size in each office allows for close mentoring and training in an informal and collegial environment. Upon arrival, summer associates immediately get to work drafting briefs, preparing for and attending oral arguments, hearings, and depositions, and they have the ability to get involved in pro bono cases. Beyond the work, summer associates have the opportunity to meet with our lawyers in a more casual atmosphere at a series of events planned throughout the summer.
