VAULT’S VERDICT:

Small but mighty may be the best way to describe Cahill as associates appreciate the hours, compensation, and firm culture. Candidates typically come from top law schools and must be hard workers. Moreover, they must be social, friendly, and team-oriented to integrate into the comfortable, collegial work environment at Cahill. Because of the firm’s small size, partners are accessible and take the time to get to know associates both personally and professionally. Opportunities for interaction and feedback are plentiful given how closely partners and associates work together, and formal training programs through Cahill Academy are thorough and scheduled regularly. Additional benefits of its smallness, transparency and communication are commendable. Associates receive significant assignments that often push them beyond their experience level, and they continue to get challenging projects as they progress and feel ready. A free market system encourages associates to seek work preferences, while some tasks are distributed based on demonstrated competence. Despite having no billable hour requirement, associates are expected to hit a certain hours target. Flexibility in work location is a cited advantage. Salaries match the prevailing market rate, and bonuses and “special” or “super” bonuses exceed the market. Health and wellness are supported appropriately, with the best support often coming from concerned coworkers. Pro bono work is encouraged and promoted, and these hours count as billable. Associates recognize diversity efforts in the form of affinity groups, hiring, and promotion. Associate elevation to partner at Cahill is common and realistic, though counsel positions are available as well. Exit options include in-house positions in banks.
