VAULT'S VERDICT:
Cozen O’Connor recruits well-rounded associates with clerkship and real-world experience from all law schools. Coworkers are collegial, supportive, and collaborative, and they enjoy social time with each other. Partners, called “members,” respect associates’ time and opinions, and members and senior associates provide ongoing input, feedback, and advice to further associate development. Associates are formally trained through CLEs, practice group meetings, and workshops. An orientation program and other resources support lateral onboarding and integration. Work assignments vary, but they are substantive and appropriate for the associate’s experience level and include client contact. Workloads are manageable. Cozen O’Connor sets billable requirements by department and allows flexibility in working from home. Compensation, though lower than that at comparable firms, is reasonable given work expectations, but decision-making regarding bonuses is unclear. Firm technology, including hardware, software, and AI programs for research and drafting documents, is innovative and helps improve efficiency. The firm’s wellness offerings include free counseling services and discounts on health insurance. A full-time pro bono director encourages pro bono work, 75 hours of which count toward the billable hours requirement. Associates see opportunities for promotion to membership.
