Foley Hoag LLP

Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Attorneys come to Foley Hoag from a variety of schools, many in the Boston area or near other office locations. Small class sizes mean that hiring is competitive, so successful candidates must demonstrate interest in the firm and a specific office and show the ability to work on a team. “Collegial” describes Foley Hoag’s culture. Colleagues are close-knit and unpretentious, and they regularly socialize in the office. The training for laterals and junior associates is commendable, and mentoring is helpful for associates at all levels. Partners promote associate development and treat associates as valued team members, but the level of transparency from firm leadership is said to have recently declined, particularly with respect to compensation. However, attorneys say that the 1,850 billable hours target is manageable, and at least some associates feel that they work less than their BigLaw peers. Compensation is below market, but associates point to the lower billable hours expectations, indicating that they are satisfied. Associates appreciate receiving exciting work and significant responsibility with support early in their careers. Firm technology has improved in recent years, with the firm exploring AI and seeking to stay up-to-date. A culture of caring, in addition to mental health services and the Headspace app, characterizes the firm’s wellness initiatives. Foley Hoag excels when it comes to pro bono opportunities, and up to 100 pro bono hours count toward the annual billable hours target for associate bonus eligibility, with billable and pro bono hours treated equally after the hours target has been met. A two-tier partnership translates into a realistic pathway to income partner, and equity partnership is achievable. Other firms or corporations are common alternative destinations.
