VAULT'S VERDICT:
Foley Hoag has deep roots in Boston, and just like Boston, the firm’s impact is relatively large for its small size. The firm’s recruiting process is rigorous but holistic. A wide net is cast to catch talent not only at T14 but also, especially, Boston-area law schools. The firm prides itself on its friendly, collegial, and “unproblematic” culture, so personality and diversity in experiences and backgrounds are emphasized in the hiring process. The hours can be long—the firm is, after all, in BigLaw—but the billable requirements are reasonable, with an 1,850 billable hour expectation that includes unlimited eligible pro bono hours and up to 100 DEI, Foley Hoag Foundation, and legal recruiting hours. Attorneys prioritize work-life balance and respect each other’s lives outside of the office. Partners are approachable, respectful, and fair, and although they have high expectations for work product, they are largely transparent about these expectations and happy to provide guidance and feedback. Firm management transparency is inconsistent, with some associates wishing for more insight into advancement opportunities and firm performance. The firm recently issued firm laptops, which associates are happy about, though many would like to see additional improvements in technology. Wellness initiatives include access to a mental health app and discounted gym memberships, and associates especially appreciate note the firm’s laid-back culture and humane billable hours. The firm’s commitment to pro bono is outstanding; all pro bono hours receive billable credit, and the Foley Hoag Foundation provides many opportunities for attorneys to review grant proposals from nonprofits. Diversity efforts are robust, and the hours spent in DEI initiatives receive billable credit, but increasing diversity still remains a goal. Partnership appears to be a realistic goal for those who want it, and many Foley Hoag partners are “homegrown.”
