Foley Hoag hires academically accomplished associates through a competitive process, drawing from top schools and seeking candidates who have work and extracurricular experiences. People in the office are friendly, supportive, and collaborative, and they care about their coworkers and their coworkers’ families. Partners respect and value associates and contribute to their professional development. Assigned partner and associate mentors provide direct guidance to new associates, and this hands-on training is generally considered to be more effective than the formal training offered. Reports on the effectiveness of lateral integration are mixed. Lean teams mean that associates are often pushed beyond their experience level to take substantive work and added responsibilities and that they can engage with clients. Foley Hoag’s billable requirement is 1,850 hours, which include 100 hours from pro bono or other service work, and for some, this requirement is seen as a trade-off for salaries that lag on the BigLaw scale. Bonuses are based on multiple factors, and associates would appreciate more clarity about the bonus structure. The firm is adopting AI to improve efficiency. Wellness is addressed through free counseling sessions, wellness challenges, and stipends for gym memberships. A dedicated pro bono chair promotes and encourages related work. Realistic career paths at the firm are counsel, non-equity partner, and equity partner positions, and exit options include going to other firms or in-house.
