VAULT'S VERDICT:
Emphasizing excellent academics and culture fit of detail-oriented candidates who can multitask, Hunton hires from a variety of law schools. Candidates should be able to explain the reasons they want to work in the Hunton office where they applied and their motivation to pursue a law career. The firm’s culture is pleasant, and although lawyers often talk in the office and occasionally gather at firm-sponsored events, the firm is more collaborative than social. Partners treat associates with respect and invest in their professional development, serving as formal mentors to new associates. The firm offers formal training throughout the year on topics ranging from litigation to technology and AI tools. Other training topics are practice-group-specific. Associates work on a mix of substantiative and administrative tasks early in their careers, with additional guidance for complex tasks and opportunities for client contact. The firm’s technology suits work in and out of the office. Hunton issues a 2,000 billable hours requirement, which includes up to 150 pro bono hours. The firm has a pro bono coordinator to promote opportunities, as well as a wellness coordinator and monthly wellness workshops. Compensation matches the top of the market, and above-market bonuses are available to those who exceed expectations. Counsel and senior attorney positions are available, with the ability to move into equity partner roles later. Attorneys can move in-house or into government. Perks include in-house counseling services, a dependent-care savings account, and backup child care benefits.
