Hunton Andrews Kurth hires associates from a range of law schools with a focus on those who fit the firm culture and will likely stay with the firm long-term. Coworkers are collegial and appreciative of one another, and partners respect and support associates. However, associates would like better communication and transparency from firm management. Lateral hires are welcomed, and mentors provide guidance and informal training to them and more-junior associates. Associates are expected to learn by doing, which they think is appropriate, but some suggest that formal training be updated and expanded. They receive challenging and high-quality assignments, although they sometimes engage in tasks below their experience level because of lean staffing. Hunton sets a 2,000-hour billable target, with 125 hours of pro bono work creditable to this total. The firm matches market salaries and bonuses, and attorneys who fall short of the billable goal typically do not receive a bonus or raise. Improved and innovative technology, including AI programs and security measures, helps associates work efficiently both in the office and from remote locations. Wellness endeavors such as health screenings and counseling services are offered. Pro bono is a strong tradition at the firm, and associates boast of the dedicated pro bono staff and the firm’s 100% attorney participation for the past 16 years. Associates are optimistic about making equity partner. Other options include becoming counsel, making non-equity partner, and utilizing the firm’s reputation and prestige to segue into external legal jobs.
