Our Commitment to Pro Bono

Our partnership agreement at Hunton Andrews Kurth says it all in its first two sentences: "The practice of the law is a service to society. While an aid to business, it is concerned also with the public welfare." We believe in a lawyer's obligation to ensure that everyone, regardless of his or her ability to pay, has access to quality legal services. To that end, we encourage all our attorneys to “give back” through pro bono service, and we allow billable hour credit for up to 100 hours of pro bono work. We are proud to state that since 2009, 100 percent of our full-time U.S. lawyers have participated in at least one pro bono project each year. Last year, together they donated more than 45,500 hours to help those in need.

In 1993, we accepted the Pro Bono Institute's Law Firm Challenge to contribute at least three percent of the firm's total billable hours to pro bono causes. We have met or exceeded the challenge every year since its inception. In addition, all of our lawyers and staff timekeepers who donate more than 100 hours annually to pro bono clients, receive our E. Randolph Williams award (named after one of the firm's founders). Each year, more than 100 lawyers and professional staff, including key firm leaders, receive this award.

Our firm supports a neighborhood-based pro bono office in Richmond, Virginia that was established in 1990 to provide legal services to those who otherwise would be unable to afford them. In addition, we fund three fellowship positions in our Houston, Richmond and New York offices for lawyers whose time is entirely committed to pro bono work, and another full-time pro bono fellowship position located in a legal aid organization in Charlotteswille, Virginia.

Pro bono work is more than doing a good deed. It is the foundation of our societal guarantee of equal rights under the law for all people, without regard to social or financial status. It is fundamental to our role as citizens and as citizen-lawyers. — Wally Martinez, Chief Growth Officer

Since my time as a summer associate, I’ve found that pro bono is an integral part of the firm culture at Hunton Andrews Kurth. It has been an important part of my professional development and a distinguishing factor in my career. Through pro bono service, the firm helps you grow, not just as a lawyer but as an individual. — Uriel Mendieta, Partner, Miami Office

Our lawyers have access to the latest technology and support from a talented staff of paralegals, professional assistants, reference and business development professionals. From my first day as a firm associate, I have always felt that everyone was rooting for me to succeed. Now, as a firm partner, I am committed to paying it forward by providing the same level of care and support to new associates at the firm. — Cecilia Oh, Partner and Asian Pacific American Affinity Group Member, Washington, DC Office

Our Life Outside the Firm

Our lawyers are "citizen lawyers." At Hunton Andrews Kurth, we believe it is our obligation to give back to the communities in which we live and work, and we encourage our attorneys to volunteer their services to charitable, religious, civic and community organizations. We also appreciate the importance of a good balance between work and family life, and provide a number of programs to support a family-friendly environment. Examples include strong leave policies, emergency back-up child and elder care, a concierge service and flexible work arrangements. In addition, we encourage our attorneys to engage in outside social pursuits and hobbies, because a lawyer who regularly takes part in activities he or she enjoys is a happier person and a better lawyer.

One of the things I value most about our firm is its commitment to “giving back” to the communities where we live and work. My community service with organizations such as the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, St. Mary’s Home and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia has allowed me to help those in need and also gain exposure to interesting and diverse people who have different views from my own. There is a whole world out there that does not revolve around the practice of law and being a part of it has broadened my thinking and enriched my life. — Sharon Goodwyn, Counsel, Richmond Office
