When hiring, Irell & Manella LLP prioritizes intellectually curious lawyers with a strong interest in trial work and intellectual property (IP) law. Good grades from a highly ranked school are required, prior industry experience is valued, and new associates should fit with the firm’s friendly, social culture. Partners often ask associates to lunch, lawyers attend firmwide happy hours, and attorneys maintain an open-door policy. Partners maintain transparency with associates, with regular state-of-the-firm meetings to review finances and performance. Two performance reviews are facilitated by two attorneys every year. Associates take substantive, meaningful assignments. Junior associates may take depositions and handle client contact, although this varies by case. Work is assigned via a free market system. The most effective training is said to come through informal mentoring, and everyone is willing to help associates be successful in meeting the high expectations of the firm. Associates can work remotely at will. The firm recently upgraded its technology hardware, and the IT team resolves issues quickly. The firm mandates a billable hour requirement of 2,000 hours, and associates who meet this threshold earn a market salary and above-market bonus. Unlimited pro bono hours count toward the requirement. Promotion to either counsel or equity partner is on the table after seven years, and exit opportunities in IP litigation are available.
