Jackson Walker prioritizes hiring candidates with the whole package—diversity, experience, grades, and a personality that will mesh with the firm’s collegial culture. Professional, productive, and respectful are words used by the associates to describe the firm’s atmosphere with an emphasis on the firmwide social camaraderie experienced both in the workplace and at firm-sponsored events. Noting a lack of hierarchy, the associates feel treated as equals by partners and appreciate having insight into firm finances, performance, and expectations of associates. Workloads are heavy but manageable with flexibility to control the location and distribution of work. While compensation may not be at market scale, the associates are generally happy with their generous bonuses. Associates retain autonomy over the sophisticated work they perform, which is largely at their level of experience or beyond. Innovative technological platforms provide seamless transitions to working remotely, but some associates wish the firm provided a technological stipend to set up home offices. Wellness efforts consist of initiatives related to physical and mental health and the firm provides a Vitality program to encourage attorney wellbeing. Formal training, including CLE opportunities and business development, are offered regularly, but the associates especially benefit from both formal and informal mentorship. The track to partnership is extremely realistic for the associates at Jackson Walker with in-house opportunities and non-partner roles available for those not interested in partner prospects. The firm has been making noticeable progress in its diversity efforts and associates can credit up to 50 hours of pro bono work to their billable hours.
