VAULT'S VERDICT:
Jones Day seeks candidates from high-level and local schools, emphasizing fit with its friendly and laid-back culture. Attorneys socialize weekly over lunch or coffee and informal get-togethers. An in-office presence is encouraged in line with the firm’s “one firm worldwide” philosophy; however, associates say that they have flexibility to work remotely as needed. They also attend formal social events, such as a recent party at the Spy Museum in Washington, DC, if they choose. Partners show respect to associates and gratitude for their contributions. Working on lean teams, they trust associates to do substantiative assignments early in their tenure. The firm provides first-year associates with the option of trying several practice areas through its New Lawyer Group, but associates say that it’s important to network and search for the types of work that you want. Although most attorneys start at the firm with assigned mentors, additional informal mentorship is available for those who seek it. The firm has a 2,000-hour billable requirement that includes uncapped pro bono hours. Taking pro bono work does not negatively affect associates’ bonuses because the firm does not pay bonuses. Associates say that compensation is competitive with the market, but salaries are not disclosed and are not lockstep. Making partner is realistic for attorneys who put in the work, and long-term counsel roles are available. Associates who exit tend to leave for in-house or government opportunities. Notable perks at the firm include parental leave, which associates say is generous, and 20 days of child care or elder care per year.
