Our Survey Says
- “I received substantive work as a summer associate and received early opportunities to help with drafting motions.”
- The summer associate program gave a good sampling of substantive assignments across practice groups and was a good indicator of how life as an associate would be.”
- Our firm hosted ‘introductory trainings’ for each practice group to give each summer a baseline for each industry. In addition, further training opportunities were offered on an individualized level. We also had a streamlined work assignment process where a member of HR/Recruiting would check in periodically to assess the level of substantive assignments you had been staffed on. If you were not provided opportunities to engage with substantive assignments in practice areas of interest, they would facilitate that opportunity.”
- “I was involved in many matters and gained substantive experience throughout my summer.”
- “The firm had a number of social events throughout the summer. Attendance was fairly high by current associates at the firm. There were a number of opportunities to build camaraderie as a summer associate class and interact with firm attorneys.”
- “The firm organized many events and provided us with many opportunities to network with other members of the firm.”
- “The social events planned for the summer associate program are relaxed, fun, and (at times) lavish. Each summer associate class becomes incredibly close, naturally. The firm does an excellent job in cultivating camaraderie by encouraging the summer associates to plan any other events they may want to do together at the expense of the firm (in addition to the already planned events). You will also enjoy several partner dinners where summer associates have dinner with just partners. And this is all in addition to the daily lunches that are planned with junior and mid-level/senior associates.”
- “The summer associates were and still are very close. Even now, we practically eat lunch together every day and regularly spend time together outside of the office.”
- “I think my experience as a summer directly correlated with my experience as an associate. I'm still working on substantive matters with the group I aimed to be in as a summer and while in the first-year associate pool.”
- “The main difference between the summer program and the reality of working as an associate is that you are expected to be on call more. As a summer people were quite generous with taking on anything that occurred outside of business hours, while as an associate, this is not the case. However, this is an expectation that I did have and was not surprised. I would say I am pleasantly surprised at the work-life balance that I am able to maintain in terms of late nights and weekends—they are usually infrequent, and if they do occur, advance notice is usually given.”
- “I was happy that I was able to get a lot of substantive experience and feedback over my summer.”
- “Not all too different—my work right now is every bit as pleasant as my time as a summer associate.”
- “The best summer event was a virtual escape room.”
- “My favorite summer events were a trip to Washington DC, a boat cruise, and a Mets game.”
- “Bowling and soccer.”
- “My favorite summer events were the partner dinners and the trip to London. It is a Linklaters tradition to take a trip to the firm's headquarters in London for a long weekend. The partner dinners are also incredible because you get to meet the partners in a different capacity that is much more personable and approachable.”
The Firm Says
Our global reach means that whether they are based in New York or spend time in another office, such as London or Frankfurt, our summer associates gain a truly international perspective with exciting opportunities to work closely with partners, counsel, and associates on high-profile matters for some of the world’s leading organizations. Many summer associates spend time in two offices, and all receive real responsibility, access to partners and clients, and exposure to a variety of work. In addition to attending dedicated summer training sessions, summer associates attend attorney trainings and practice group meetings and participate in pro bono work. Each summer associate is paired with two mentors and receives two formal appraisals over the course of the summer. A variety of speaker sessions and events, including our midsummer retreat in London, give summer associates the opportunity to meet people across our global network and get to know their colleagues.
